I don't know. I wouldn't count Fedor out just yet. A large number of people don't think Werdum can win again if they were to have a rematch. If you think of it as a race, I guess you can say Reem is currently half a step ahead of Fedor. Then of course you have to consider Cain who I think would at least give any top HW in Strikeforce a big challenge.
Saying Overeem is the best heavyweight in the world is like saying Antonio McKee is the best lightweight. Overeem simply hasn't got the resume to back it up. The only argument you can make is that he will some day prove he is the best. Right now, it is just speculation.
For me , for Overeem to make the top 5 , he'd have to go out and start fighting top level HW's !!!! We know all about Overeem as a fighter , he's been kicking around for years , and he has more high profile defeats than he does wins , its not like he's a new Overeem ...... In summary , resume weak (as a HW) , untested (@ HW) , but would appear to have huge potential !!!
I'm also not sold on this 'massive transformation'??? Barnett Vs Overeem is the way to go, but obviously Overeem has gone back to K-1 for now. Barnett Vs Big Foot would be fun, dunno if Josh can even get licensed to fight in the U.S again can he?!? I still put all those guys underneath Werdum and Fedor in the Strikeforce rankings. I have those guys at no.1 and 3 respectively. I think Fedor will beat Werdum without much hassle in the rematch, he'll be sure not to make the mistake of engaging Werdum too much whilst he's down, just to be sure (I mean, it's not like he's been found out to be vulnerable to BJJ, he beat a far superior BJJ practitioner right in the middle of both their primes.) Fedor looks to be nearing the end of his physical prime IMO, but could still prove his dominance at the top without joining the UFC. There are four opponents of all different shapes and sizes, (all bigger than him, naturally) and after that he can retire. It probably won't go that way, but in 2011 AT LEAST we can expect to see Fedor-Werdum II and one out of Barnett and Silva. In the best case scenario, Overeem shows more leanings towards MMA again and we get to see Fedor/Werdum Vs Overeem. It'll take an opponent like that to prove his true worth at the top IMO.
He landed, but Werdum seemed to fall from no punch in particular; I have no idea if it was the accumulation, Werdum slipping, or Werdum just going to guard. I think that in the same series on the ground of Fedor being lifted off the ground with his arm in, then yea, he would lose every time. Overall, I would pick Fedor. When I say it's what he always does, keep in mind it was working up until a very slick move by Werdum that needed a lot of things to line up.
Well once it's trapped, there isn't much to be done against Werdum; Werdum got it very deep very early and also cleared the other arm with his leg very early. What Fedor did in the first attempt is make sure to get the arm out of there before it's trapped.
It's funny...MMA fans have ants in their pants because of the lack of ambiguity in determining who exactly "the man" is at heavyweight (with the problem of comparable talent levels and different effective styles being exacerbated by the promotional issues that render all this talk purely hypothetical). Boxing has the opposite problem, with fans griping because of the boring and monotonous level of dominance of "the man" in that sport (some think there are two, or even three guys sharing that top spot...but really, it's 1...much clearer than the MMA scene). Greener grass...:yep
Based on Overeem's current record you can't really call him the best heavyweight on the planet. IMO that's Werdum atm; the man who beat the man. However once Overeem does manage to get fights with the best I think he will make a very good case for it.
