How many of you watching boxing in the 1990's thought it was a great time for heavyweight boxing? I did. I remember the older folks who said it wasn't. They were wrong. Great talent. Great depth in the division. Some memorable upsets. Some very good non PPV fights. What more could a fan ask for?

I remember Holyfield being considered sort of a placeholder and the long wait for either Bowe, Moorer, Lewis or Mercer to make him irrelevant. As we now know, that never really occurred. It was certainly the most powerful era of heavyweights, so many devastating punchers.. Tyson, Ruddock, Morrison, Lewis, old Foreman, Bowe, Bruno, Tua, Moorer, Sanders...

No matter what era you're in, it's always considered a terrible time for heavyweight boxing as it's happening.

People always ***** about how terrible it is, but yes, I think at that time there was a lot of excitement for it. Not so much late-90's, but when Lewis pole-axed Ruddock around the time Holyfield and Bowe went to war the first time, people raised their eyebrows a bit and there was a good measure of enthusiasm.

Early 90s, for a few years, yes.

1990 - '92 was good, with Douglas-Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, Ruddock, Lewis, Mercer and Moorer coming up.

By 1995/'96 the quality had fallen somewhat. Tyson's return amounted to little, Holyfield was already ring-worn, Foreman took the linear title, Bowe was prematurely washed-up, Lewis was progressing slowly .... guys like McCall, Bruno, Seldon, Schulz were holding the major belts. Not good.

At the time I thought the early 90's were quite terrific. Had an altogether different relationship with contemprorary boxing than I have today. Remember sitting up in the middle of the night with mates watching Tyson-Ruddock, Ruddock-Lewis, Holyfield-Foreman, Holyfield-Bowe, Ruddock-Morrisson, Bowe-Golota, Tyson-Holyfield, DLH-Chavez etc.

    Dose were se days.

I think that anybody who questioned it at the time, must surely see the error of their ways in light of what has transpired since.

If boxing ceased tomorrow, then Lewis Klitschko would be remembered as the last great heavyweight title fight.

I thought we were talking about the 90s. :huh

Lewis-Klitschko was a horrible fight. A couple of big oafs tripping over each other's feet in an effort to hug one another ....

I remember thinking it could be a great era but unfortunatley the best fighters usually didn't fight each other. Holyfield was the only one who was eager to fight the other top Heavyweights... even when his best days were behind him.

In the 90's Holyfield fought Douglas, Foreman, Holmes, Bowe x3, Moorer x2, Mercer, Tyson x2, and Lewis x2.

We should have seen many more big fights-

Tyson should have found a way to stay out of jail. He should have fought-

Bowe, Foreman, Lewis (in the 90's), Holyfield (a few years earlier), Mercer, McCall, Witherspoon, Tua, and a few others.

    Bowe should have fought Lewis

    I would have also liked-

    McCall vs. Mercer

    Foreman vs. Holmes

Overall, the 90's were pretty good though

    It got my pulse racing.

It was the last time that the two best heavyweights in the world faced off.

    Interesting suggestion.

I had high hopes for Lyakovich but sadly it was not to be.
