    My top 10

    1. Muhammad Ali
    2. Joe Louis
    3. Sonny Liston
    4. Larry Holmes
    5. Rocky Marciano
    6. Mike Tyson
    7. George Foreman
    8. Lennox Lewis
    9. Joe Frazier
    10. Jack Johnson

I don't think Langford beats any of these men, although he would give some a very difficult time.

    Langford beats James Jeffries

What I think hurts Sam's legacy more than anything else is the fact of who reigned during most of his prime, an ATG who battered and dominated him the one occasion they did square off. Could Sam have been the best heavyweight in the world at anytime in his career? Is it a sure thing he would have beaten Burns prior to Johnson defrocking Tommy at the end of 1908? Langford did knock out Wills the second time, Jeannette and Battling Jim Johnson the year after Willard ascended to the throne, but those were his last major heavyweight knockout wins. He was sputtering hot and cold by now with around a dozen sub par showings over the distance from 1914 to 1917. Could he have forced Willard to a halt, the likely scenario necessary for lifting the title from Big Jess, or was he simply too small and too long in the tooth to punch the durable Willard into submission? (The likely requirement for gaining the title from Jess would have been a knockout.) His best hope may have been to see Wills challenge the big guy, then get a championship crack at Harry.

Langford maybe beats Dempsey, but he isn't in my top 10.

Thoughtful post , imo. I don't know that even a prime Langford has an easy time with the Havana Willard. Willard was good at keeping it at long range , his telescopic jab , and thumping right cross ,
and an uppercut just as deadly , ,these might be insurmountable obstacles for Sam . Fulton, and Smith won fights against him by just keeping him on the out side ,. I am speaking of the trained ,to the minute raw boned giant that beat Johnson, not the flabby ,complacent Jess ,that Dempsey crucified.

First of all he was half blind in the period you are referring to ... then it is purely a matter of styles ... the men close to his size who came at him would get slaughtered ... the boxers had far better shots ... Dempsey's exact words were he was afraid of Langford as a young fighter and even post career was far from sure he'd have ever beaten him ...

And why isn't Langford a reliable source for interviews? That was his opinion, which was based on the assumption that Jeffries would return to his from from 5 years ago which obviously did not happen. I do not recall Langford making up as many tall tales as Jack Johnson did.

Most of the black fighters including Jeanette and Mcvey felt Jeffries would win too.

He isn't the most reliable of interviewees, because his opinion is coloured by the fact that he detested Jack Johnson.
This has nothing do do with Johnson 's tales has it? It isn't a comparison, it is an opinion I have given ,and I've now explained why I have formed it.

All of those were wrong were they not?

I think Langford and Jeannette were filled with sour grapes when it came to Johnson ..

I think Sam would beat the so-called champs like Berbick,Page,Ellis,Seldon,Witherspoon,Weaver and Dokes as far as ATG top 10 he has a chance vs Holyfield, Foreman, Jeffries and Johnson because of styles and he did beat Johnson...He could also lose to them all but he has a chance because of styles, he did beat Johnson but Jack got him also

So do I ,and they probably had reason to be,but that does make them very reliable sources for quotes imo.McVey was a staunch friend of Johnson's he travelled and lived with him for a while Johnson paid for his funeral.
Johnson referring to the great black trio is no less unreliable imo.as he had a great deal of affection for McVey, he allways said he was the toughest opponent of the three for him to fight,in actual fact he beat him easily in all three contests.
