How many people have lost respect for Calzaghe?

There was a time a while back when I liked Joe; I never thought him the greatest but I had a soft spot for him thinking he sometimes got kinda a raw deal from people particuarly here on ESB and even though I rooted for Hopkins I still respected and knew Calzaghe would make that fight a fight.
However since ducking Pavlik and opting for RJJ I've lost all admiration for him and as much as I try I find myself no longer able to respect him as a boxer in any way shape or form.

1st In his autobigoraphy & in the run up to Kessler he maintains Jones is an old man and an utterly worthless matchup. Then he talks about defending against Pavlik only to go utterly quite after the Lockett matchup and then chooses to fight Jones!!! :huh - a blatent contradiction! Against the mainstream boxing medias feelings too.

So basically guys what I'm asking is how many once Joe Calzaghe fans here on this board are no longer Joe Calzaghe fans or at the very least severely dissapointed in him as a result of his recent actions? How many of you feel a little let down & perhaps like Joe is a hypocrit? Most importantly though how many once Joe fans now want him to loose as a result of his selfish greed & opportunism?

Assuming that there never been too many who had respect for
Calzaghe so far ... then it is not too many who lost it.

Definitely have a lot of respect for his skills, not much for his record.

I grew up in Newbridge so have known the name Calzaghe since his amateur days at the ABA's. I'm probably the longest reigning fan of his on these boards. What I've come to realise about Joe is that he literally only gives a **** about himself. You can't resent him for that and that kind of single mindedness is what has got him where he is today.

He pissed me off personally with his ticket antics for the Hopkins fight and there have been times where it's been frustrating watching his career dwindle away. But I don't ever think I could support anyone he was fighting.

This fight against Jones Jnr is complete horse-**** but Joe sees this as a business nowadays, not a sport for achievement.

Who cares. Leave the guy alone. He is trying to make some money before he is through. Many fighters have done this in the past. He is close to forty. Who is Pavlik? He beat Taylor twice and in the process he almost got stopped in the first meeting. He is a MW so let him be at MW. So what you are saying is if Joe decides to fight one more time and it is with Pavlik and he beats Pavlik, you will have respect for him? I have seen this too many times in the past. Oh ****, he stopped Pavlik, let's find a tougher opponent for him before he retires or turns fifty. Again, give the guy a break. He might even lose to RJJ, but you can't beat everyone or stay undefeated without somekind of contreversy.

    A good contribution. Thanks.

In a lot of ways though, Joe has brought this on himself by declaring Jones an unworthy opponent previously. That kind of stuff is giving ammunition to the enemy.

I never had much respect for him, in all honesty.

For 10 years he had absolutely NO qualms about staying in his protected back yards fighting average-to-terrible opponents, milking the public with his "WBO"-nothing title claiming he was not only a world champion (when the WBO was considered no higher than the IBO is today), but one of the better ones.

2 years at the end of his career, 2 undefeated-but-untested contendors, a 43-year-old career middleweight, and another 40-year-old who's even MORE shot, don't change nothing. In fact, it's more of the same "milking".

While it's better than the 10 years of his non-career (his supposed title reign, where another fighter was making the exact same record against the exact same fighters sometimes, but just with a IBF and WBA title) - There's still very few (outside of his diehard fans) who would rate either Lacy or Kessler as being "great" fighters (even if they were being tipped to win, that's at testament to what people thought of Calzaghe as a fighter than what people thought of those two) or who WOULDN'T tip EITHER a prime Hopkins or Roy to beat Calzaghe (and quite comfortably, at that).

This guy TO ME (and it's all a subjective opinionated thing, no?) represents all that's what wrong with boxing.

Never had much respect for Slappy Joe so can't really lose respect for someone you didn't respect from the get go. I respect the beating he gave Lacy though.

In a way I have because hes said Jones was shot and he had no intrest in fighting him now he is. But in a way I havent because Jones has been looking better recently and the boy can still fight hes old but still the fastest handed fighter in the world. Calzaghe aint no spring chicken himself.

Yes, I understand that, but would you or anyone here ignore a massive payday. The worse that can happen is that Joe loses, but can anyone spell rematch for bigger bucks. I hate to say this, but just like PBf who cares what people think of me, I'm rich. Money changes everything. Marciano would be no exception if there was money like today back then.
