Ive never been his biggest fan, but I don't really dislike him either. I can take or leave him; I have very much enjoyed some of his fights though. His contradictions of late have made him look a bit insincere in my eyes. Perhaps that's a bit strong.
I don't understand this post. Calzaghe stayed in the same weight division and didn't go anywhere. He couldn't have made MW so Hopkins et al are completely out of the picture unless THEY stepped up. The only way he could have gone would be up to LHW but chose to stay at 168 and eventually unified that division for the very first time. Calzaghe, in the ring, has a true fighter's heart and balls of steels to do what he does. He takes a hell of a punch then he comes straight back to put pressure on the other guy. He's been on the canvas thrice in his career and he's got up and won each of those fights. That, to me, is what's good about Calzaghe and indeed, about boxing. Yes, he could have done more... but what fighter in history can you say make perfect decisions throughout?
I never had much of an opinion about Joe one way or the other. When he called Pavlik out after the 1st Taylor fight a lot of people on ESB critisized Joe for calling out a guy from a lower division. I did not. I thought HELL YA; I want to see these two get it on! When Joe performed so well against Kessler, I almost became a fan, but then, before Taylor announced he would excersize his rematch clause with Pav, and before any other fights were made, Joe ran down to the nursing home and made a fight with BHop. He lost me right there, and I just couldn't believe he got a pass for it here on ESB. In January of this year Joe said that he was only going to fight once more after BHop. He also said Roy Jones was a great fighter, but he is not a great fighter now, and that fighting Roy would be a disappointing way to end his career. He stated clearly that he wanted to fight Pavlik, or if JT won the rematch, maybe him. Pavlik won the rematch by UD. Joe squeaked past BHop. Pavlik destroyed Lockett. Pavlik said he wanted Joe before he gets one day older. Arum tried to make Pavlik/Calzaghe. Frank Warren said yes. Joe fired Frank, and made a fight with Roy Jones who is more shot than John Kennedy. I have zero respect for Calzaghe.
He still may fight Pavlik yet. If he doesn't then i would be a bit dissappointed in him but he wouldn't be the first boxer to take a supposed easier fight and bigger payday for his swan song.
This is fine. Listen, he's made blunders on record and he's left himself wide open for the **** he's getting. He has nobody to blame bar himself - but he's probably richer than all of us so probably doesn't care that much.
Kept banging on his autobiography about how he didn't wanna face Jones JR any more as he was ****ing shot, then this ****?! I've lost a lotta respect for the fella.
joe made the comments in his book before the kessler fight was even made! he stated he didnt want rjj to be his next fight , thats all! he even stated that he wasnt to hyped bout fighting kessler! he said it wouldnt be as big as the lacy fight! since then he whooped kessler , soundly beat hopkins , now he fancies an easier , although challenging, massive payday against rjj! the guy has earned it . give him a break!!!
I respected him immediately after the Lacy fight. But when I saw more of him, it wasn't very hard to lose it. Especially after reading all the nonsense his nuthuggers put on this site
man youz guys talk crap!! Joe would kick Pavliks ass!!! How many times does people have to put the guy down??!!! Lets remmeber this is prob the same people who thought Lacy and Kessler would beat him but look what happens. tell you one thing what has Pavlik done to even step in the same ring as Joe, When Joe beats him what then fight someone else whos unbeaten please, Pavlik should fight Lacy, Kessler even hopkins before even considering Joe,
Another classic from TheCobra. I never had a lot of respect for Joe but I have infinitely more respect for him than I have for that chump in your avatar.:smoke
Calzaghe has beaten 2 undefeated hot prospects then a living legend in Hopkins , he more then deserves to call the shots on he's next if not last fight and Roy jones jnr is not a fight you take to avoid another hot prospect (Pavlik) . Calzaghe has dreamed of this match up for years its just a shame it was too hard to make when jones was prime . a 50/50 fight
You really shouldn't let other people's opinion of someone effect your opinion of them. All top fighter's have nuthugger's. It's best just to ignore most of their biased, un-objective views.
Which years? The years when Jones was p4p number one & Joe was wasting his time defending a worthless bauble or the years when Joe was writing in his book how Jones was shot & not worth fighting?
I think you may be a bit behind the times. Pavlik sparked the guy who beat BHop TWICE! Joe's best wins to date are over a Mikkel Kessler who fought with a broken right hand, and BHop -- a 43 year old career middlweight.
