I second the motion, Carlos Monzon was favored.

I remember that after this bout, the WBC president Jose Sulaiman ordered Carlos to defend his title against no. 1 contender Rodrigo Valdes, Colombia. Monzon ignored this demand, Valdes then won the WBC World Middleweight Championship by knocking out Bennie Briscoe in round 7, in Monte Carlo, Monaco, on May 25 1974.

I do not believe in beating your wife and children, these are the people who love you and you love them. You are supposed to protect and support them, but besides the distasteful things he did in his personal life, he was a great fighter.

That I did not know about. I knew that he did live in poverty with his family, when he was discovered by Amilcar Brusa as a thin teenager. He turned pro in Feb 1963.

I'll have to look it up Richard but I'm sure I read that he robbed a bank after he retired.

I Knew some people who used to go to a town in Mexico, they used to tell me when Carlos Monzon and Jose Napoles retired, they used to travel to Mexico to play cards with people who used to frequent the bars over there and talk about their fights. The people I spoke to said that those two were bored when their career's were over. I knew they were truthful because they showed me their autographs. I saw Carlos following the Sugar Ray Leonard vs Daniel Gonzalez fight on March 24 1979, on my way to buy a beer, we both nodded to each other, he was tall and looked like he did on television.

Wow ! All the Fighters I've met have been, by and large, nice guys. If Monzon had nodded at me I think my blood would have run cold.
Just looked him up on Wiki and no, he didn't rob a bank. He strangled his girlfriend and chucked off a balcony killing her.
Like we said. Bad guy !

They still confuse the private and the in the ring Monzon...and I'm afraid that this is a reason, plus stylistic prejudice and just basic ignorance is why Monzon is so misunderstood on this board.
