I have put up some classic Tunney and Loughran. Now bring on the Hearns. I think that Hearns Hill would be the best frame of reference.

It is probably unreasonable to say round.

You could maybe assign a probability to to likelyhood of Greb being stopped in each round.

7 % -- Greb is stopped in the first round

22 % -- Hearns takes pity on Greb and waits until the second round to knock him out

71 % -- Who cares about Greb and Hearns? Calzaghe is the greatest fighter of all time.

Good Post. Common sense really. I would pick Hearns by a TKO stoppage. Hearns had power, but couldn't Ko Iran Barkly when he had the chance, so I wouldn't say he could KO "everyone". I just think that greb is too poor defensively and would take too much accumulated punishment.

Hearns would defeat Greb, and without much difficulty. Greb was definately a great fighter and fought rather actively to say the least, but he also only scored 48 KO's in 260 wins. You had to be either a superior boxer or a great puncher to beat Hearns. Greb was neither where Tommy was concerned. Available footage shows us clips of Greb pawing and slapping at opponents, whereas far more recent fights with Hearns reveals that he was a deadly puncher and crafty boxer who could defeat even the greatest of champions. The best way to describe Hearns is to say that he was a heavyweight built into the body of a Welter, Middle and Lightheavyweight fighter. He had an incredible jab, reasonable speed, and tremendous power. Most importantly, he wasn't afraid of anyone. Of course he was stopped a couple times, but they were mainly against the best of the best, and some of these occasions occurred when he was past his prime. Thomas won world titles in at least 5 different weight classes, or something to that effect. He likely would have destroyed a fighter of Greb's good but limited abilities.

I see this fight happening 2 ways. Hearns dominates the early rounds, and Greb turns up the heat late for a close pts win. Or Hearns gets stopped late because he is too winded to defend himself.

I think you are getting a little ahead of yourself here.

Greb did not knock Gene Tunney out but he carved him up into sushe and Tunney had to be caried back to his dressing room. In all Greb beat up seven fighters who held the lineal light heavyweight championship. That alone should tell you that Hearns is going to be out of his depth here.

What is Hearns going to bring to the fight that all the light heavyweights and heavyweights that Greb defeated couldn't?

Anybody who fought him or saw him in action would be laughing at you right now.

If you want to know the truth there were many times more operational boxing clubs and experience boxing trainers then than there were at any time since. The number of men fighting profesionaly worldwide was at its absolute peak.

They might not have har the internet but they did have trains and boxing manuals. Fighters probably traveled about more then than at any time since.

I know that Amsterdam started this thread to make meatballs, but I think it would be a really good fight with Hearns on the horrible end of a bad beating. Be a gripping encounter though.

China_Hand_Joe, you're point about the internet and excellence isn't really valid. Isolated streetlamps of knowledge are the key to excellence in this discipline, and although it may be easier to get the basics fromt he internet/mass market publishing, getting one on one time with an Arcel type, or stumbling across the trainer who is perfect for you like your man has, is still just as difficult.

What i'm saying is, the cirulation of knowledge which you're talking about isn't going to make any difference to the reality of the situation.

George Chuvalo was easy to hit, perhaps Hearns knocks him out in one round also.

As a matter of pure speculation, would anyone like to nominate a fighter who perhaps could KO Greb in one? I'd like to suggest Tyson, Louis, Foreman and maybe Liston cold do it.
