Greb, via close decision. Over the course of a 15 rounder? Something like 8-6-1.

Hearns' best chance of winning is early on, but Greb proved to be hellishly difficult to stop (Am I correct in saying he was very rarely, if ever stopped?)

Hearns didn't like pressure, and didn't know very well how to fight at close distance. Greb by wide unanimous decision.

Most valid for the sports science aspect of the sport. Most trainers now will have at least a little knowledge about the best ways to improve fitness and conditioning.

It is mostly irrelevant though as Hearns was also around before the internet.

The legendary trainer, Enzo Calzaghe picked up most of his boxing knowledge through observation.

Most trainers then at least had a little knowledge on how to imporve fitness and conditioning too.

You should read Jack Johnson's book (if you're really interested), there's all types of **** in there that is still applicable today.

As you say, Calzaghe picked up most of his stuff by watching.

At the end of the day fighters will do whatever they have to in order to learn the black arts.

Joe Gans got a job carrying Bob Fitzsimmons spit bucket just so that he could learn from him.

Kid Chocolate studied hours of film of great fighters on a projector to pick up tips.

Even today James Toney and Bernard Hopkins watch film of Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore to pick up things that no trainer can teach them.

Yes, they take the basic theory and do it much better. Just like an MMA champion can learn Jiu Jitsu from an old black belt with no reflexes or stamina.:good

But reflexes and stamina are physical qualities, not skill-based. I can partly agree with stamina (if you show that modern fighters' stamina is better, that is) due to training...but reflexes are innate abilities that do not change from generation to generation.

I believe he is talking about refined physical qualities.

Reflexes, co-ordination can be honed through training for example.

Modern training techniques, whatever they may be result in todays modern, sharper fighter (they certainly look more formidible on film in that area of their game).

Johnson, although he is not agile, is an example of an old timer with extraordinary reflexes. He could pull back late (in a straight line no less) quickly enough to create a lunge in his opposite number.

I don't see modern fighters as having lesser reflexes than their historical counterparts and you do.

    Murder.

Perhaps the quickest reaction times i've seen ARE those of a moder fighter though, Roy Jones. But he looks a good deal quicker than most modern MW's as well as most historical MW's.

On the other hand i've never seen a puncher MORE perfect than Louis, who is from a past era.

greb was tiny how was he larger:huh
i think greb was a pure pressure fighter and threw so many punches that it was hard for him to lose. im talking about 120 punches a round here he had a chin of granite the only person i think could beat him would be god by sd
and jesus maybe would of given him a run for his money but he is so good that he beats anyone post 1940

and now has bradley pryce, enzo maccerinelli, gavin rees joe calzaghe at world or commonwelath honors

all of them have no distinct attributes that others fighters have joe clazaghe as fast and stamina driven as he is is pretty much flat footed and has a decent jab but far from atg

maccerenelli as big as he is is a slow mutha****er who doesnt have the ring mobilty that others have.

gavin rees 5'3 featherwieght now a lightwelter is tiny and has no range to his punches yet he has blitzing handspeed

and brad pryce is a tall rangey guy but is very much a boxer with no speed or power yet has techniques that get him through.

i think enzo calzaghe is a great trainer and from a former musician to world class boxing trainer who has learnt through only going to through the archives to find good fighters with that persons specified description.
e.g he watched ray leonard, pernell whitaker, max rosenbloom to see that combo's southpaw stance and hard but effective slaps can work miricles
