There was a thread asking how well would Lalonde have done during Saad`s era, I don`t rate Donny at all so I thought a good way of getting his chances in perspective during te 70`s was to compare what Saad would have done to Ray if he had met him in his era and threw Tommy in because I thought by the time he moved up to light heavy in `87 he had started to slip and was far slower by the time of his rematch v Ray at 168lbs, so asking about Tommy`s chances at this time also gets how far Ray had slipped by the time he knocked out Lalonde.
Well if Hearns fought Saad in 1987, Hearns would have destroyed him, Saad's career was over after his second loss to Qawi. The Leonard that beat Lalonde would have beaten Saad also. Now if we're talking prime Saad Muhammad, like from the second Marvin Johnson fight, he would have destroyed both of them easily.
Hearns and Leonard had the "it" factor that Saad sorely lacked. The bright eyed silver tongued pretty boy and the quiet, moody Hitman fron Detroit. Glistening hand speed and exquisitely orchestrated knockouts. What did Saad have to offer, exactly? A grim, dull workmanship like ring persona that soured TV exec meetings and, quite frankly, bored female viewers. Always absorbing big shots but rarely, if ever, having the grace to please the crowd with some nice looking knockdowns. Knockout blows thrown with too much technique. Opponents collapsed in lame fashion, as opposed to doing the funky leg or something. What? I want my money back! Both Leonard and Hearns take Saad out before the third round. Too much hand speed, too much flash, too much starpower. Real, genuine, firsthand TV fighters like Leonard, and so by association Hearns, should never be compared to ordinary fighters. Please.
Saad easily beats both. Leonard never even fought at 175 lbs. He fought LaLonde at a catchweight of 168 lbs. Leonard was not nearly physically strong enough to trouble Saad. He could move, but Saad would walk him down and slow him down with his underrated body attack. It was all Leonard could do to outslick a fading but very physically strong 160 lb Hagler. Saad was a uniquely strong 175 pounder. Leonard's slickness and smarts would ensure he survives in the midrounds. But his punches would be like slingshots against a fighter with the strength, punching power and heart to eventually walk through him Hearns would be a tougher proposition because he could carry 175 lbs quite well because of his natural frame. However, his punching power at 175 lbs was not outstanding, as it had been at 147-160 lbs. In addition, Saad would not look to outbox Hearns from a distance, as, for example, Virgil Hill attempted to do. Saad would get inside Hearns reach and close the distance. Hearns was never effective once the distance was breached. Saad would eat some right hands. But, this would not dissuade him. Saad would eventually cut him down. Leonard and Hearns were better all around pound for pound than Saad Muhammad. But he was the better Light Heavyweight.
Both last awhile, but Saad inevitably wins. Too durable for Hearns, and Leonard never was a real LHW anyway.
What are you talking about....if Ezzard Charles can get a drive named after him in a major metropolitan area, then Donny Lalonde should get a whole major city named after him. I move to rename New York City to Donny Lalonde City!
Saad Muhammad was a very durable fighter with good recuperative skills and a very hard punch as exhibited in his fight with Yaqui Lopez. Tommy Hearns does hit very hard, but his chandelier chin would fail him in the end, Saad Muhammad by tko 10. Leonard would start out fast, but he cannot hurt Saad and would be discouraged and tire. Saad by 9th round stoppage.
Greatness has been achieved by you today in writing SHAD!!! I love this post! We need more like you me and Boxedears. WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!!$$##### Seriously though great post!
I LOVE any topic regarding Saad, my fave light heavy. Saad knocks out Hearns after possibly getting floored himself (hard to say though, since Saad was a natural light heavy and Tommy DAMN sure wasn't). He wouldn't last with Saad much (if at all) longer than against Hagler. Leonard makes Saad miss a lot, but Saad was no Lalonde, way more heart and significantly more powerful imo. Leonard wouldn't be able to take Saad's supernatural perseverance and gets knocked out in 12.
Mathew Saad Muhammed executes Hearns about like Hagler did at 160, Leonard? forget it, Ray wouldn't get in the ring with a top flight light heavyweight , he wasn't stupid
