Assuming they stay relatively healthy, what's a fair and reasonable number? Clottey, Forrest, and Santos are the main reason I ask...

Depends what stage of their career they're at.

If your Wlad and you dont get hit ever then why not fight more frequently. Get rid of your mandatories in say, 2 months time then fight Haye and retire by the end of the year please.

Well you have to take the fact that littles niggles and obviously cuts take time to heal and can keep someone out of action longer than they want. Also, there are a lot of things that go on behind the scenes that hold fights up- such as contract negotiations and waiting for dates and venues to be freed up. The days of someone fighting over 100 fights are well and truly gone. That said, at the elite level, not domestic level or young fighters keeping busy, I think 3 fights a year is a respectable number- 4 is brilliant.

That's about right. Especially if you're not in any wars.

It really depends on the level of opposition. Fighting top shelf opposition 3 or 4 times a year generally makes a short career.

A friend of mine who was involved in the fight game used to say that his fighters were advised to fight "Once every season." Then he went on to become part of Team Quintana, an insanely inactive fighter.

They used to fight 15 to 20 times a year back in the forties and fifties. One thing is for sure, guys were alot tougher and more battle tested back then.

this is a ridiculous question. boxers fight for money if you got paid 10 million a fight you'd box once or twice a year. if your gettin paid 5 grand a fight then you'd box 10 - 15 times a year if possible

Whatever the case, a pro fighter should fight at least twice a year. Other than that, as already mentioned, it depends on the stage of the career of the fighter.

For fighters at the top of their careers, I think 3 times a year is the ideal number. Enough time to train, enough time to rest, enough time to promote the fights.
