Yeah, I dunno about this word "robbed" but I think he got the benefit of the doubt as often as the benefit of the doubt went against him. He can't complain about the cards. Witherspoon and Norton could both have beaten him in way bigger/more important fights.
I love Larry but the only robbery I saw was the second Spinks fight and that was not the worst decision I ever saw .. Larry got a few nods himself ... Norton could have gone either way, Witherspoon was razor close too as was Maurice Harris ..
Williams and Witherspoon beat Holmes but lost. Weaver and Snipes were stopped when Holmes could have been stopped under similar circumstances earlier. Holmes got the benefit of the doubt more often than he was a victim.
I always felt Holmes won the Witherspoon fight rather handily. The Carl Williams fight could have gone either way. Holmes was robbed in second Spinks fight. I never saw the Nielson fight. The Harris fight I barely remember, I think it may have been a tuesday night fight showcase. Long ago. I also felt he beat Norton by two rounds, but epic fight. When a fight is competitive every round it's hard to call a robbery. Bad deciscion yes robbery not so much. A robbery is when each round has a clear cut winner of that round yet is not awarded for it when the final votes are in. As for Judges-they are usually not bribed directly-they are just treated like royalty-with the understanding that hey if you want to get future assignments we are banking on you know who to side with. The pay itself is not much-but the hotel, the air travel, the fancy restuarants, the gift baskets for the wife are all picked up. Some guys (and the sanctioning bodies know who) like to play that game. They always want the fighter that brings the best economic interest to Vegas or to the promoter. That's why it's hard to derail a money train.
I think he robbed more than he was robbed, Maurice Hope beat him and Larry got the nod, Williams & Witherspoon may have gotten the short end of the stick or Larry may have edged it but these were close fights so they were not robbery's they were re-matchable fights though
Holmes could have beaten McCall had Larry trained harder. I never thought Larry pushed himself in training during the latter stages of his comeback; he often times seemed not in the best condition (at least stamina-wise). He was ahead of McCall for large portions of their fight, but he simply got tired.
