Twice: by McCall and Rahman. Against McCall he got up but was controversially stopped on his feet. Against Rahman, of course, he was knocked out cleanly. There was what some claim was a knockdown against Akinwande, but I think it was a clear push in a fight full of wrestling tactics from Akinwande. He was also nearly knocked down by Shannon Briggs when Briggs stepped on his foot and landed a left hook. Compared to most heavyweight champions (Tyson five times, Holmes six times, Ali three times arguably four times, Frazier ten times, Patterson 1 billion * 40,000 times, Walcott many times, Louis again on quite a few occasions etc.) Lewis was rarely punched off his feet.
Many champs would have been floored/stopped by the shots Tua/Vitali/Briggs landed on Lennox though so its not as if he hasnt got chin/recovery/heart And yes its only 2 times
controversially? Lennox was glassey eyed, had rubbery legs could barely stand without stumbling.....he was out
I know , his chin is underrated imo, as he took some good shots throughout his career, some think he had a glass chin, which i think is harsh, but he never got off the floor to win, i know this thread's not about that, shouldnt have brought it up really!! Seen as though i have though, let me say, it DOES take something away from his status, not enough to make him not an ATG or anythin', one of the greatest HWs ever without doubt. EDIT- this a reply to Powerpuncher's post!!
many champs would have got up on steady legs after taking those mccall and rahman rights.......recup powers
And how many champions have been allowed to continue under more serious circumstances, LATER in fights? It's controversial because it's plain to any reasonable observer that the stoppage was, frankly, political. The ref had at least one eye on Tyson's comeback.
i also thought he touched down against akinwande though it wasn't called.i'm going from memory though so may be wrong as i wouldn't sit through that again.
Being floored only two times is not at all bad when we consider that: A. One of them happened when he was 35 years old. B. One of them resulted in a stoppage while on his feet. C. He avenged both defeats, whearas some champions couldn't come back to defeat their conquerors. D. He tested his chin on numerous occasions against other big punchers without ever going down.
You could argue that Briggs technicaly knocked him down in which case he didcome off the canvas to win.
