I've never seen this fight myself but apparently from what I've heard, it was an all out war that could have ruined either man's career. I guess Mason suffered an eye injury or torn retina of sorts, and it basically drove him into retirment. Lewis also took quite a few hard shots.
Lennox was on shaky legs but wasnt nearly 'out' - Marciano, Holmes, Ali, Holyfield have been on shakier legs than Lennox was against McCall and won. Lennox would have won if it continued
Not necisarrily they were hail Mary shots from 240lb Heavyweights that were binafied punchers, if Marciano/Dempsey/Frazier took such shots they may have been out too. Especially if they were caught with their chin in the air. BTW Lewis was what 34-35 against Rahman and past his prime
Marciano took said shot vs Walcott in round 1, got up pretty fast. Joe Frazier took so many bombs from Foreman, but hey not even the mighty George Foreman was able to put Joe out for the count.
Walcott doesnt hit in the same dimension of a 240lb KO artist like McCall, and if there 1 thing McCall could do it was throw hayemakers In both of Lennoxs KO losses his defenses were down and his chin was in the air, this is the worst position for your chin to take a shot, if his chin was tucked those shots wouldn't have ko'd him and thats a fact
did marciano ever strumble across the ring on rubbery legs like lennox did when he fell into the ref after getting up on the mcall kd?
I personally don't have any problem with the stoppage against McCall, as it was somewhat legit, and we don't really know if he would have recovered or not, my guess is no. But I also think him being down only twice against the heavy hitters of the '90's is far more impressive than his naysayers will acknowledge. Nor do I think is it a fair comparison between the comp Marciano faced and the comp Lewis faced. Had Maciano been around in the 90's or turn of the century he would have been down too, even if he was another 20-30lb heavier. Certainly Tua would likely have hurt him, and a couple of others. Of course this is only speculation but it's a reasonable assumption.
Yup. Probably took more flush shots there than in any other fight in his career. Have to take into account he was quite a bit skinnier/lankier back then too, and Mason could bang. Something like two out of 40 of his fights went the distance.
Ali did, Holmes did, Marciano was on rubbery legs against Moore and Walcott and his legs were half the length of Lennox's so if he was on wobbly legs its less noticable :yep
His glove touched the canvas briefly, but Akinwande landed with his right forearm, i.e. not a legal punch, so it correctly was not ruled a knockdown, although i think the ref just missed Lewis's glove touching the canvas.
