I have been accused of being old, but not that old. I was around in the days of 15 rounders because Ive spent most of my life in & around the sport. Boxing is a very dangerous sport & every possible thing that can be done ,should be done to improve its safety.I boxed as a youngster wanted to be a champion but soon discovered I did not have the talent or the bravery so I gave up after a scare. I know several former fighters that have suffered greatly from taking too many punches for too long, just to entertain others.
Make it shorter, like odd 9 rounds, even 7, even 5 for unknown undercards. No need to sit thru boring bouts. Would also make room for more fighters to be paid. Hence boxers would be forced to start early, be aggressive. Would also prevent those types who would box and move half way or near the end. Would make bouts more exciting. We had 15, now 12, times are changing, make it shorter.
A few people suggesting 15 rounders and same day weigh ins. I dont know what the answer is but I know fighting longer with a potentially dehydrated brain is crazy talk.
No one would see the final bell, they just don’t make jaws like they used to, the late 80’s to early 90’s was when the decline kicked in. I don’t mind seeing 15 rounders come back but it should only be for the YouTubers and the influencers.
im all in favor of it. so we can do an apples to apples comparison with the greats, who could, and did, fight 15 rds. those last 3 rds is where heart and conditioning separate the men from the boys.
Part of me says yes... I think the superior fighter would tend to win more often with the extra 3 rounds. But also, nah. I think having it 12 helps its entertainment value. So id keep it this way. Rather they make gloves smaller.
Seems like it might help to keep the fighters a bit more honest about which weight class they try to fight in. Maybe you wouldn't have guys sweating down to 135 and then showing up a day and a half later at 160.
It would make fights more dramatic but it would come at a cost, namely fighters being badly injured and dying. It could again see campaigns to end boxing as a sport, I remember than being a thing in the 90's after the Watson and McClellan injuries. It's simply not worth the cost, we changed things for a reason and it was a good reason. Nostalgia isn't 20/20 we remember the good while often forgetting the bad.
Wasn't it Holyfield in the quawi fight where he said "halfway through the fight I felt like giving up like I was swimming in the ocean, except I was halfway there in between the start and destination, except I didn't know if I had anything left in the tank, so I didn't know whether to turn around or completely finish the fight." This is paraphrased from a Holyfield excerpt I've read I think in the Holyfield book years back. And that, coming from holy who is a tough man. I agree 13 rounds would diminish most draws (uneven number of rounds) but after ray Mancini and Kim, also Emile Griffith vs Benny Parrett where the mayor said "there are plenty of other sports out there to play without hurting one another" (from the film ring of fire documentary) and the pummeling that goes on past the 12th is inhumane. I am suspecting though that the bookies "like" 12 rounds for monetary purposes. A fight like Pacquiao morales one however woulda been exciting for 3 more rounds! Certain fighters like morales would be eye candy performances in a 15 round fight with their blood and guts style. So like I said, it would look nice to the eye, but no because of safety reasons. What about longer breaks in between rounds or same-day weigh ins? I'm not the first to ask that but that's another topic for another day!
The decision to limit fights to 12 rounds was not made for entertainment purposes. In fact the tragedies that occured only occured because such responsibilities had fallen sacrifice to the persuasion of such a group to whom the sport is only entertainment, whether to be enjoyed or provided, and so it is not the right of said people to reverse the decision. The fighters and their representatives should have the only say.
