As far as fight machine goes. I don't think they or anyone else can be better than them. They were as schooled as it gets. Robinson could have been more defensive minded..but it never really hurt in that he wasn't in his prime.

They were both so in shape that they both fought in at least 200 fights. Winning just about all of them.

As a functional beneficiary in boxing, Sports Science is the art of pinning technical names on bodily processes which are either formalities or of no consequence.

You don't need to know what glycogen is to throw a left hook.

Boxing is as much psychological as it is physical. When you think of what it takes to wait in the dressing room for your turn to fight...the long walk up to the ring and stepping inside the ring to get ready to fight and trying to stop the legs from shaking once the bell rings and you have to appreciate the mental aspect of the sport. you're not being timed against a stopwatch or judged about how much weight you can lift or even what you look like. You're there to fight...against another man who will be trying to take your head off in front of a crowd of spectators. Ted Spoon was right. Maybe for an Olympic sprinter modern training methods apply..After all he's being timed against a clock while running on a track. No one's trying to knock him out. Ray Leonard, when examining Michael Spinks' training regimen before taking on Larry Holmes noted that his regimen with Mackie Shilstone benefited Spinks psychologically...Spinks felt "bigger" and I think it was a valid point. For the record I'm not against modern training methods. Obviously they work. But Boxing is a different animal. Time machine Ray Robinson, Ali, Greb, Louis, Hagler with thier "primitive" training regimens and see if they'd make noise in todays boxing scene.
