How much credit do you give Norton for beating Quarry?

how far over the hill was Quarry? He certainly was not in shape

    Great performance by Norton though

    Quarry was shot.
According to Quarrys biographer Norton was still gloating as the fighters crossed paths leaving the arena and Quarry offered him a fair one on the asphalt. Norton wanted no part and quickly left.

Quarry was fat and his head was not in the sport for that fight. At their best I think Quarry wins.

Yeah,...there was NO resemblance between the Pillsbury doughboy who Norton beat up on and the counter punching machine that stopped Thad Spencer and who took apart Buster Mathis.

He's as perfect an example of a passed prime and slightly broken down prizefighter as you'll ever see, in the Norton bout. I've heard he was drinking heavily at the time and had severe marital issues.

He had no business being in there with Norton...or with Frazier two fights earlier.

Thanks for the replies...I have definitely been giving Norton way too much credit for this victory in the past

I've always felt that Norton got Quarry at the right time. I've heard that earlier in their careers both these California heavyweights sparred together a few times and Quarry schooled Norton.

I give him very little credit. Quarry was shot and out of shape and on top of it he was supposedly hitting the nose candy very hard and took the fight on short notice and he still had Norton hurt at one point.

Yes it’s been widely reported that Quarry routinely got better of Norton in sparring

I think it meant more to Norton personally. Quarry being a big star and from Southern California may have played a part in Norton's attitude. Kenny was in his absolute prime then and he was feeling himself.

Quarry was hot and cold for years but certainly at the end vs Norton. I am not sure if Jerry, even at his best beats Norton as Ken was different than the prototype Quarry tended to feast on .. any claims to him hurting Norton in their bout are overrated .. Norton did not tend to respond well to being hurt .. maybe Jerry landed a bit but I don't remember seeing Norton in any serious trouble.

The fight does little for Nortons career it was obvious looking at Quarry's condition he was not in shape to fight and certainly not in his prime....a few years earlier Norton gets beaten

It would have been a good fight in their respective primes. I wouldn't bet the farm either way.
