Please give your "grade" to the winning fighter from 1 to 10 with ten being the best grade, in terms of how much credit should they should receive given the skill level or condition of the fighter in front of them that night. For example: Aaron Pryor KO 14 Alexis Arguello - I give him a 7. Arguello was certainly still dangerous, but by 1982 he was fighting ten pounds above his best weight and was frankly a bit wooden and rickety. Good fight, exciting and controversial ending, but in no way should stamp Pryor as an ATG based on the result, drug scandal notwithstanding. Roberto Duran W12 Iran Barkley - I give Roberto a 7 here as well. His narrow points verdict over Barkley was less a Fountain of Youth moment so much as it was good matchmaking and Duran deciding to take it seriously one last time. Barkley never met a right hand he couldn't block with his face and though he showed some good skills that night, was never on the level of a Duran and this shaped up to be a stylistic matchup favoring Duran all the way, assuming he was "on" that night. He happened to be, and the result was actually fairly predictable. Solid win over a young, strong middleweight; another title for Duran, so credit to him, but not the legendary comeback moment it's played up to be. Leonard W12 Hagler - Yeah, I had to, sorry. I'll give Ray an 8.5 on this one. It's true that Marvin was old and worn and did himself no favors at all by being so inactive once he started to make the real money, I think everyone (well most) would agree with that. That ignores the fact, however, that Ray was also coming off a very lengthy layoff, far longer than Hagler's. His was a style based more on youth and reflexes and motion. At the age of 30 himself, this was a risk that is rarely mentioned when discussing the bout. I'm no Leonard fan believe it or not, but credit where it's due. Feel free to add others...…..
Harsh. You a hard man. I'd give Duran a 10 for beating Barkley as in one of the finest wins there is. No way a former lightweight champ should be able to beat a middleweight that big and that aggressive. Sick Langford ****. Leonard, I give a 9 for beating Hagler. Absolute genius performance against a bigger fighter for all that the glimmer had gone out.
I give Pryor at least an 8 for his win over Arguello. He elevated his standing that night against a legit ATG. I give Leonard a 9 over Hagler - perfectly executed gameplan and like has been said, by a guy who was out of the ring for the better part of 5 years against a long reigning champion. I give Duran a 9 as well for his win over Barkely. To put it in perspective, I give Duran 10s for his performances against DeJesus, Palomino and Leonard.
Heheheh……...I dunno, I'll have to think. I picked a couple controversial ones to get some conversation flowing I suppose. I'm not really that parsimonious.
I give Leonard and Duran a 10. They were both huge underdogs at the time of those from fights. Barkley was limited but Duran hadn't beaten a notable opponent since 1983. His last fight against a legitimate top 10 ish opponent was a decision loss to Robbie Sims in 1986. Duran got the shot against Barkely on his name only and turned on the magic one last time. Sure Hagler was winding down a little, but Leonard had had one fight in five years and looked bad in that fight, gettng dropped by Howard. I can't give Pryor a 10 because the circumstantial evidence points to his trainer cheating. I give Pryor an eight. If I knew he performed without any Illegal stimulation, I would give him a 10.
Leonard W12 Hagler ….5.0 Leonard didn't beat him imo. Holyfield Bowe I...10 for both men, the fight that automatically turned both of them into ATGs.
If Duran was a top 3 world class natural 25yo middleweight you could proably score him an 8 for the Barkley win. It was all but a decade after he'd beaten Leonard and near 6 years after he'd lost to Hagler. He hadn't beaten a genuine contender for almost 6 years, was 37 and hand a helluva lot behind him. I could go a 10 but accept a 9.5. SRL would be 9.5. Pryor would be 8 with a demerit point for the controversy. There was a segment that thought if Pryor fought smart he could win.
