How much did Joe Cortez ruin the hatton mayweather fight?

in years to come the story will go hatton was battering mayweather and the big bad ref made hatton fight with one arm and his best pal mayweather ended up winning because of this!

cortez was nowehere need as bad in this fight or biased as people make out, it is just a popular assumption to make.

 

Spot on :good. Floyd made a point of beating Hatton up inside the pocket. A lot of illegal work with the forearms but he was stronger then Hatton thought and the fans.

Many had Floyd down as this fragile mess who would fall apart after a few body shots. The Castillo fight fooled a fair few fans for sure, It was a class performance from Floyd he set traps all night. Hatton didn't box with a brain he just thought his intensity and strength would win him the fight.

Same thing with Pacquiao but he fought like he did after the point deduction against PBF.

 

Hatton ****ed-up fighting at 147, he should have dug his heels in and Mayweather would have fought him at 140 or a Catchweight, no way Floyd and Vegas would have passed on the chance of those Hattonites visiting in their droves.

The Collazo fight took a lot out of Ricky IMO and should have hit home that he was not as strong at 147 with his style.

Cortez had a shocker, but Floyd was well prepared for any rough-housing and importantly had a strength advantage.

Not saying it would have affected the outcome but if Floyd had to boil down to 140 or even a Catchweight of 143/145 Ricky would have had a far better chance of being more effective.

 

Joe Cortez did nothing wrong in that fight, Holding is illegal and unfortunately all Hatton does is hold, hit and hold, hit and hold, hit and hold, seriously that's all he does.

Its a horrible and illegal style of fighting, if other referee's did their job properly by enforcing the rules and taking points or disqualifying for excessive holding then Hatton wouldn't of went any where in his career

 

I agree but forearms across the face are illegal that much should of been pulled up. But i agree the holding Hatton did and other do today is horrible and is a disease in the sport when fighters use it excessively..

 

BF. A lot of the time it was Hatton getting in close and either the other guy clinching or both fighters holding/ not working. eg. Hatton got called on here for holding against JLC when it was Castillio who didn't want to work inside.

On Cortez, I think with another ref Hatton may have seen the final bell but thats about all. If Cortez consistently reffed his fights that way then fair enough but its never seemed that way to me, esp. when you look at Calzaghe-Hopkins which he was in charge of around that time.

 

Mayweather did more work up close than Hatton, the refereeing in this fight was pretty similar to the refereeing of Tyson vs Holyfield I.

I think it would of been a better fight if Cortez would of just let them maul each other.

I honestly think Cortez was overwhelmed by the occasion.

It was a 50/50 fight for me, and Mayweather's toughest fight in recent years, along with De La Hoya.

 

I actually watched this again last week and until the point was taken off it was a close fight, so really I don't think he ruined it, he was just annoying as ****. Maybe a bit biased towards Floyd but that's about all.

Again I agree with most that it would have been a points decision, and I think Floyd would have won the late rounds fairly comfortably.

I would certainly suggest watching it again for those who haven't seen it recently. For the most part it was much closer than it's remembered as being.

 

I don't think he affected anything. A strong argument could be made Hatton gets beat up quicker with no ref intervention. He was getting a hiding, a lesson in inside fighting.

The mayweathers made a big deal pre fight about it. Not only did Cortez buy it, it played on hattons mind too. And floyd had prepared for the close quarters stuff too. The whole episode, before and during the fight, was a masterclass really.

Edit to say Cortez was terrible

 

Mayweather beat him hands down he's just a far superior boxer even if Matthew was the ref Hatton was getting schooled i can see how Hattons fans would be annoyed at Cortez but he got to do what he wanted in the Tyszu fight
