    he definatley impacted it.

Without the bull**** it's conceivable he could have made the final bell and lost a decision, which would have had a huge bearing on how he's percieved

Cortez allowed Mayweather to fend Hatton off
Upclose using an illegal forearm to the head/neck not some
Mastifull shoulder roll or anything like that. Floyd was Aldo the fighter who was holding abs hitting - again Cortez didn't have a problem with that. I will never forget around the 3rd or 4th round when Ricky landed a good left jab (The punch that Floyd is most vulnerable to IMO) and had him defenceless against the ropes when Joe went steaming in and pushed him away before he could have a swing at him.

Floyd would have won anyway but without Cortez favourtism it would have been a much better specticle and I dont think Ricky would have lost his head as much and it would have gone to points...having said that Ricky unlike most of floyds opponents was still trying to win the fight late on which is why he got caught with the check hook as he went flying in trying to land a big punch- this is something I felt he didn't get credit for especially as it was a PPV fight.

Cortez was terrible, kept breaking them every time they got close, nullifying Hattons attack to the body, yet when Cortez reff'ed the Calzagie/ Hopkins fight he was very slow breaking them allowing Hopkins to spoil, 2 different fights, 2 different methods of control, one thing in common, Cortez helped the American fighter against the Brit on US soi.

Hatton wasn't getting the better of Mayweather on the inside anyway, all his best punches came from distance when he planted his feet and pushed off. He never had a chance that night

What I never understood though, was how Cortez was so quick to break up Mayweather and Hatton, yet he allowed Hopkins to have his own ways with headbutting, holding and hitting all his other dirty tricks against Calzaghe? Inconsistent to say the least

I can say it. Hatton was a nightmare to handle with his constant pressure. It doesn't matter if hit him with clean shots or not, Hatton's game is always to overwhelm not to outskill. Watch the fight again and drop the whole 'history revisionism' smug bollocks.

There was nothing wrong with Cortez breaking the fighters up when he saw a little holding and hitting; however, Cortez should be called to account for his inconsistency in refereeing these two fights (Hatton - Mayweather and Calzaghe - BHop) in contrasting manners.

I agree with those who felt as though FMJ was getting the better of the fight on the inside so I do not feel as though Cortez was protecting Floyd, in any way. However, where I also feel that Cortez should be held to account was that he was frustrating Hatton even moreso than FMJ because he was allowing Floyd to fight his fight but not affording Hatton the same.

People can rightly say that a better mentally disciplined than Hatton would not have lost his cool in the way Hatton did after the point deduction but that is another reason why I am critical of the way Cortez reffed this fight. Firstly, Floyd turned his back, secondly, Hatton did not connect and thirdly, Floyd used a few illegal elbows to great effect and did not suffer a point deduction.

There is something to be said in the old adage that the best referees are the ones you don't notice. In this case, Cortez's actions are more discussed than anything either fighter did in the fight so on that basis, I think it is more than fair to criticise him for how he refereed Hatton-Mayweather.

My comment was in reply to REEVO's statement that Hatton was not going to win a fight, fighting on the outside.

Mate, higging someone to death isn't the same as punching them in the head. Hatton did not land a single memorable punch the whole fight and it was an easy win for Mayweather.

Quality post mate, always great to have your input :good

I agree that whilst Mayweather was more than holding his own on the inside, Cortez's actions, whilst not affecting the outcome of the fight (Mayweather victory), may have affected the ending. Ricky wasn't doing much wrong, and he effectively ended any chance Ricky had of implementing his gameplan.

Mayweather has always gotten away with elbows, it's a sneaky trick of his and I'm surprised more refs don't pick up on it. I remember Ortiz complaining about it as well.

I enjoyed Mayweather-Hatton, the build up was fantastic and the fight was entertaining, it's just a shame that years on we'll still talking of the poor job Cortez did that night.

    Kind regards

I'm going to agree with glue glove. Go and watch the fight again, until the point deduction Hatton was right in the fight, I think even Ledderman had him up on his card. No he didn't land a 'memorable punch' as such but then off the top of my head neither did Cotto.

Watched it a few times since the night. To be fair it isn't as bad as I thought it first was when watching it live, definitely had an impact on Ricky's temperament which made him throw caution to the wind when frustrated and open himself up for Floyd to pick off shots more easily. Hatton probably would have seen the final bell with a referee who didn't mind the fighters getting inside, would not have won it though.

What is a popular misconception is that Hatton was shite in this fight and couldn't touch Floyd. Was quite bewildered Hatton himself tweeted that the other day, he certainly gave Floyd some problems.

i believe he ruined hattons chances, he was constantly breaking hattons momentum and style, he was basically setting floyd up to land punches.. he was like a body guard in there.. hattons style though is dirty and you cant expect to go in there with the best and just try and grab him up..... and hold...

If it was in England and mickey duff was in charge i think it would have been an ATG fight... with floyd KOing him late, hes too sick for hatton.. but hatton would have gone down a proud man

hatton never had the chance to switch and throw to the body in the clinch, because Cortez was too quick to break them.

    Billy Graham ruined it.

Fancy using a big, fat padded black body bag to emulate Floyd f*cking Mayweather !

That bag and Floyd had only one thing in common.
