Overrated at that time, sure. I don't think he was EVER the number two heavy in the world. Underrated in general? Maybe. That's my point.
Tyson didn't ruin Ruddock. Ruddock ruined himself. He was never mentally sound as fighter and could have done a lot more for himself in his career IMO. Ruddock got his nickname "razor" because of his razor sharp jab that he obviously left in the gym on both fight nights against Tyson and his match with Lennox Lewis. I think he could have beat Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe and Ray Mercer. His lost to Morrison is disgraceful as far as I'm concerned.
The ref had no business ending that fight. I think Ruddock still might have nicked if not for the very premature stoppage.
Ruddock still used that same defense in the Lewis bout as he did in the Tyson bout. When he threw that lazy jab against Lewis, Lennox was just waiting for it & had obviously studied and prepared for his opponent & fired right over it. Ruddock threw the same stuff against Tyson. But Iron Mike never countered over it the way Lewis did. But the opening was there & Tyson really didn't rely on counterpunching his way to victory. But it was a serious flaw in Ruddock that 1 guy could exploit--and who else out there at the time could do what Lewis did that night anyway?
The 19 rounds (both fights) Tyson and Ruddock fought, Razor suffered a broken jaw and ribs. So perhaps Tyson did slow him down for Lewis. I do think Razors heart might not have been into the Lewis fight as it was before. However Lewis would have won most likely anyhow unless he got caught with a lucky smash by Ruddock.
19 rounds as in the first fight went 7rds and the second the distance of 12 combined Ruddock and Tyson fought 19 rounds that is what i meant.
Tyson ruined him. After the second fight Ruddock spent two weeks in the hospital suffering from a badly broken jaw and other injuries.
