How much did the Cotto-Margarito fight take from each other?

I have been watching boxing for a long time, and whenever fighters are involved in a bloody fight, most of the time, those fighters will never be the same again.

The thing that I noticed is that fighters lose their punch resistance, their mental toughness to engage thus becoming tentative.

    My question:

Did it in a way changed the outcome of the Margarito vs. Mosley fight or the Pac-Cotto fight? And if yes, by how much can you attribute it?

This is a serious discussion and not as a hate thread. So anybody who will put a spin to it as a Mayweather-Pac upmanship, just don't participate.

Nothing. It was just a fight, nothing more nothing less.

No fight where you take that much punishment has zero effect on you.

I think Margarito's decline is from the wear-and-tear of a long career. Fighting professionally for 15 years with a high energy style. The Cotto fight probably just added to the miles on him. Margarito probably wasn't all mentally there from getting caught for his disgraceful acts, plus Mosley fought a great fight.

Cotto likewise has taken a good deal of punishment in his career. Torres, Judah, Clottey, and Mosley were all rather physically taxing bouts. Margarito gave Cotto a terrible beating and I think affected him mentally. Cotto looked mentally ****ed against Pacquiao from the 6th round-on. Overall I'd say Cotto had declined but not all that significantly where he still wasn't a top fighter. Sort of like Meldrick Taylor in 1991, or maybe Vargas against DLH.

I guess every fight changes all fighter's future fights to some degree. That one was a brutal affair, and it is possible that it took more out of each guy than it seems on the surface. Probably less for Margarito, even though he got subsequently mauled by Shane. Cotto seems a bit like a wounded dog since then, still very dangerous, but a bit unsure of himself.

I did think about all of Cotto's very flush, heavy-handed and numerous shots that landed on Margo during the first six rounds of that fight when Mosley knocked him out. And I did think of all the facial damage Cotto received in the Margo fight when his eyes became swollen against Pac. It's not that Cotto wasn't already a bleeder prone to getting hurt but he is probably going to be much more predisposed to swelling now. Aged ten years from one fight in the regard of swelling, I suspect.

I thought the same thing. Between those 2 fights and the cut in the Clottey fight, his face has taken a beating.

And it's going to take an even worse beating in the Foreman fight. A guy much bigger than PacGwire and Margacheato.

Bigger, but Yuri's not a big puncher. He'll box Cotto, and might very well win. But I don't think he'll punish him. He's KO'd, what, 8 guys? ....... and he's never been in the ring with the likes of a Cotto either, so I'd still favor Cotto in this matchup.

    What fight were you watching?

The first half of the fight, Cotto was dishing out punishment as well. What amazed me was the ability of Margarito to take them.

Exactly. The first 5 rounds was a clinic. I was astounded Marg was still coming after all the leather he had eaten.

I think both (Cotto/Margarito) those guys got sumthing taken from them in that fight bt more so Cotto. The punches he landed on Margo was unreal and in the first 6rounds he was landing at will (Margo's detriment in the Mosely fight). Thing is I think Cotto not only lost sumthing physical in there but also mentally, even though Cotto isnt a 1 punch KO artist, the punches he landed (and Im sure he thought so too) would get a reaction from a mule and yet Margo just brushed them off like nothing.

Could it account or contribute to the decrease in the punch resistance of Margo in the Mosley fight? Afterall, Cotto really was landing tons (did not count but I am certain he was landing more in terms of number than Mosley) of it in that fight, yet Margo was still standing.
