Anyone know? I was just curious because Mickey Burnett another MMA fighter from the earlier UFC's benched 400Ibs. and they always say that Matt Hughes was the strongest 170 pounder in UFC history.

No way, GSP threw Hughes around like a ragdoll. Even in 2003 a green GSP was more than holding his own in that fight. (imo he would've won the 1st round)

I said Mickey Burnett benched 400Ibs. But I wanted to know how much Hughes benched since they always said he was the strongest 170 pounder in the UFC. And GSP beat hughes with more techinque than anything, so it looked like he was stronger but if they both went in the weight room to see who lift the most hughes would definetly lift more than GSP.

I think the great strength they were talking about with Hughes was a functional strength that's impossible to measure with a set of individual lifts. He doesn't have to bench more than Mikey Burnett to be 'stronger' in a useful sense.

Well strength in MMA or wrestling/grappling doesn't really have much to do with bench pressing; plenty of incredibly strong grapplers don't even bench press at all.

Found this on his forum from an older interview

"I do not max out anymore, and have not for a long time.

    Years ago: bench - 310, squat - 375, deadlift - 425"

And here is his workout routine that he put on his website

Again though, take 99% of the people who can lift those numbers, and a guy like Hughes or any other really strong wrestler could throw them all over the place.

Him jumping on to two dumbells on top of a bench, pretty impressive.

Lifting 100lb dumbell above his head with one hand, uses his leg but still impressive; apparently Robbie Lawler can just do a one handed snatch with it, thats really impressive.

Not necessarily true. And "weight strength" is not practical strength in all cases. GSP was beating Hughes with skill yeah, but he was also bullying him at times and throwing him around. If Hughes was so much stronger he would have been able to put up some resistance on the ground....which he really wasn't able to stop anything GSP was doing.

You need confidence and self belief to do anything stressful, Matt Huges could very well be stronger but he lack the confidence to use it against GSP, plus it's not like GSP has knurled hand bars on him, strength and power are important factors when it comes to fighting but time and time again it technique which can over come these at times.

Quite strong, but goes to show ya how ******ed people are. This popular fighter is risking possible injury just to put up a video on Youtube of him struggling with some weights...and almost ripping his shoulder? Maybe I'm being overly hypocritical, but it sounds crazy to me.

It's not to put up a video on youtube. He said they'v done it plenty of times as a game.
