Is 154 going to be in a year or two? Mora. Angulo. Kirkland. Latimore. Julio. Probably Paul Williams before too long. We're seeing the rebirth of the division. But oh yeah, boxing is dying. I always forget. atsch
Agreed, but I'm mostly excited for HW in the coming years. Wlad, Haye, Peter, Povetkin, Vitali and that freak Valuev will always make for an interesting fight.
what i hate about this division is that my hometown guy (Alcine) cannot for the life of him get any international recognition, and because of this he is having a tough time landing fights against well known names. I hope that if he beats Santos he will get some weight behind his name
I'd love to see him get into the mix also. This division is going to be absolutely loaded with great matchups by 2009.
I at one time had thought the middleweight division was loaded with guys that would make for a very entertaining division for years ... until Kelly Pavlik took over. 154 now has rising stars. I find that any division without a clear dominant fighter can become very entertaining, as I felt the MW division was, as well as 140 (before Mayweather and Cotto left).
Good points. 140 about five years ago is where 154 is now. 140 suffered from the fact that it's up and comers vacated (Zab, Floyd, Cotto, Hatton for a while) and it's contenders never lived up to their promise (Lazcano, Harris, Bojado). We'll have to see how this current crop of light middleweights pans out, but it will be entertaining as long as it lasts.
perhaps it would be sup par about 2 years from now. one of the belts held by dzinziruk is being held as a prisoner. Phillips and mora, i don't think they'll hold that belt for too long. And theres JCC jr. in that division.
who are you picking? santos is a real good fighter when hes prepared and motivated, but alcine is good too. should be an interesting fight. winner gets major props.
well he just became champion not too long ago...he still have time to build up his recognition, the fight with santos would add to that depending on his performance and most of all if he wins
That's what ruins every division. These alphabet soup organization make BS mandatories and allow fighters to keep these belts for what I can only see as hatred towards the other organizations. Then there are arguments of which one is more important, as well as in order (WBC #1, WBA #2, etc). Then that only depends on personal opinion, and unifications become rare. I've always disliked fighters who hold belts hostage. Felix Sturm appears to be one, but even more strongly at one time I felt it towards Pongsaklek Wonjongkam who was holding the WBC Flyweight title hostage defending against guys with 10 wins. I understand that the Flyweight division may not be on the European and US scale, but I was bothered not by the fact most of his bouts were in Thailand but that they were against nobodys. It may be just my personal opinion but think it ruins the sport as well as its public image.
