He's declined significantly in terms of athleticism (nowhere near as fast as he once was anymore) but he seems like mentally (ring IQ) hes actually gotten better.
His physical decline is hidden well behind his exceptional technique and timing. He has dropped off but he's retained alot of his speed and reflexes. I watched the Ortiz fight last night and noticed he doesn't have the same spring in his legs when leading with the left hook, so he abandoned that and relied on the right hand. Floyd isn't Roy Jones, as his athletic powers fade he still has Bernard Hopkins like technique and craft to fall back on. Like I've said before, Floyd is the missing link between those two.
Definitely declined... BUT Floyd has adapted to make his style work for him. (Smart muthaphukkka... when it comes to boxing)
I think he's a little more flat footed than he used to be, but his style will still see him through most challenges out there.
exactly. i remember watching the Ortiz fight live and noticing this is not the same Mayweather im used to seeing. it could have been ring rust but his reflexes and foot work wasnt very impressive
I've noticed that with his lead hook also. And really, you don't even have to go that far back to see he's declined. Look at just one round vs Baldimir and Floyd weighed in around the same day of the fight [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxWbjgnJm5s&feature=related[/ame]
Good answers so far I say yep he declined but his ring IQ is off the charts which makes up for it anyone noticing he sorta adopted a new style he is now sorta bullies opponents by fighting in the pocket by standing infront of them while at the same time still being defensively sound (sorta like Russell Jr. but a bit but smarter) It seems to be working because at some point he backed down Mosley and Ortiz two guys that are known for they strength. It sorta reminds me how Jordan was so athletic during his early years and once he lost that he made up for it with his bball IQ to remain great.
even if he has declined he's still better than everyone out there in his range, how long that will last we probably wont get to see because I get the feeling that when floyd feels he's too long gone he'll retire.
He'll realise when he's in the gym, the question with any great fighter is if their ego allows them to say 'I'm not what I was, I need to stop here'.
he has def declined but he was ready for it and has changed his style I honestly dont see anybody beating him at his 147 for the next 4 years
