How much is this going to upset me?

Bearing in mind my anti-Sugar Ray Leonard rant earlier...

    https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...world-titles-at-two-different-weights.619228/

I'd appreciate people's views on how upset I'm going to get by watching...

    … Hagler vs Leonard

I've never watched the fight, mainly because I can't stand Leonard.

I did see some of it recently and it seemed more like a political rally than a boxing event with close-ups of celebrities who for some bizarre reason seemed to really like Leonard and were cheering him on. A bit like those 'people' (for want of a better word) who really like Trump and cheer him on.

Oh, and there was also the commentary that seemed to drool over everything Leonard did and disregard what Hagler was doing.

I can do without that so I'm going to watch it with the sound off and I'll tell you how I scored it.

So... How upset am I likely to get?

Depends on how you score it and how deep your distaste for SRL goes. Seems about 60/40% of posters favor Leonard while the rest favor Hagler. I am on the Hagler side.

As far as enjoyment goes, it’s not a fun or exciting fight. SRL demanded a larger ring and that cuts down on action and Hagler’s effectiveness. I favored Hagler’s more effective punches than SRL’s flurries of little substance.

So you won’t be wowed either way, disappointed depends on how deeply you care. I still think Hagler won, but it was close and legitimately can go either way.

    Good luck

I'm surprised Hagler agreed to such a large ring. It's larger than the ring used in the Thrilla in Manila and that was large by heavyweight standards!

Surely Hagler must have thought 'If Leonard is willing to accept a lower purse in order to have a bigger ring and fewer rounds then he must want it REALLY badly. I'm not going to give it to him.'

It’s also just like the one Camacho demanded against Mancini.

My advice is to not let it bother you at all. That would make your life a whole lot easier.

From my user profile you can clearly tell I've been on this site since 2005. I followed boxing as a hardcore fan since a few years prior, and I was a casual fan who came from a family of fight fans dating back virtually as far back as I can remember. So take it from me when I say I know what its like to get worked up by this sport.

For a long time I used to get really emotionally involved in fighters and the outcome of fights. I had an intense loathing for Ricky Hatton, Malinaggi, Lennox Lewis, Joel Casamayor, O'Neil Bell, Naseem Hamed, and even Sugar Ray Leonard, the principle combatant in this thread. Meanwhile I literally used to pray that my favorite fighters (the three amigos, Joe Calzaghe, Kostya Tszyu, etc.) would win in the days leading up to a fight.

When Edwin Valero murdered his wife and then took his own life that changed the way I viewed the sport forever. Other cases, like when James Butler killed Sam Kellerman, should have clued me in sooner. It made me realize that unless a boxer is doing something truly villainous, unless he's seriously evil, there's no reason to waste any energy degrading them. Otherwise they're just being themselves or trying to earn the opportunities in whatever way they can.

I know its fun to cheer when I fighter you like destroys a fighter you hate (Mayweather TKO 10 Hatton was a great night for me) but I feel like my appreciation for the sport is actually much more sincere under my current outlook. Now I mostly just care about seeing great combination punching, awesome knockouts, clever defense, and good ring generalship.

Don't think I'm totally enlightened though. I still get worked up now and then. I rode the Broner hate train for at least a year and a half before Maidana did his thing.

I don't like Ray either … The 118-110 card ruined the fight for me .. I can never see that .. If their is a clear bias going in .. a card like that ruins the fight for me .. Canelo GGG as well.. That aside ...it's a coin flip and you really can't argue the outcome, same as if had gone the other way.. It was that close

It was close. Hagler sort of let it be closer than it should have been but not enough to be dethroned.

You've really never seen this fight? How could you have avoided it? As a boxing fan it's as inevitable as getting laid in a women's prison with a fistful of pardons.

How is Leonard Like Trump? I mean, they both have four limbs and a head, but I quickly run out of similarities I can think of after that.

It's worth watching. It's a close fight, but I think Hagler deserved it. IIRC Leonard seemed to get rounds for goofing about and showboating.

i dont think ive seen as many swing rounds in a 12 round fight, especially one of this magnitude. I think i had 4. But its generally accepted now it was a tight enough fight that coulda went either way. I had leonard winning, but wouldnt have screamed 'robbery' had marvin got the nod

I thought Leonard won it even though I was never a fan of his. I do think if it was a 15 round fight Hagler would have taken it. Marvin gave away too many of the early rounds in my opinion.
