Provided he did not have to face Vitali he could have easily continued for a few years until he was in early 40s. The original plan was to fight Johnson and then Vitali in December so he was not going to retire just yet. Obviously, he had a change of heart after the fight with Vitali. I doubt he was going to win a rematch. He made a right decision for himself but not for boxing fans unfortunately.

Lewis retired because he didn't have any inner motivation to carry on.
He was an exceedingly rich man with nothing left to prove to himself.

Therefore, if he HAD carried on he would have got beat.

"Lewis was reportedly in his finest shape since his first meeting with Evander Holyfield and may not want to waste a training camp in the Poconos."

It was Vitali who made him look flabby, old and unmotivated.

Do you really want me to source the dozens of quotes from fighters in the past where they say "I'm in the best shape of my life"? Hell RJJ said that before Calzaghe:lol:

The proof is on the scales and in the ring, infact both Lewis and Steward admitted 100% motivation wasn't there for Johnson, that's 2 weeks motivation for Vitali.

I'll also provide a post I made of HW's in there late 30's and how very few can still cut it there.

Had Lewis and V.K. fought their rematch in Dec. 2003, I think V.K. would've waxed Lewis in about 6 rds tops...... Lewis resigned cuz he knew deep down he had little left in his gas tank at age 38.... WORD!

I can source you as many quotes from fighters saying "I wasn't at my best - they caught me on my off day" after they got a beating in a fight.

Lewis was in a good shape and he certainly had motivation for at least 2 fights before Johnson fight. I can easily believe that motivation wasn't there for rematch with Vitali given how much leather Lewis ate in the first fight.

We'll just have to disagree. I think Vitali slumping on his stool after the 6th and breathing heavily was just as telling. Oh and the whole time Lewis was "eating leather" he was moving forward throwing bombs of his own.

lennox was out of shape for that fight, Vitaly was in shape and highly motivated.

If they were to fight later that year who do you think would have been more likely to improve considering these facts?

A bit more.... But, Lewis was still fading by 2003 cuz of AGE / TEAR!

V.K. was the future; that has been proven--NOW!

V.K. was kickin' Lewis' ass in 2003. Had that cut not occurred, Klit prolly would've KO'd Lewis late.

Lewis DID retire a few months later and declined a rematch.. Why? He was set to receive $20 million...
