how much more would calzaghe have to do to get the respect he deserves?

    True.

I have a feeling people will also say all he did was expose Dawson and didn't fight Bute at super middleweight.

The guy will always be in a lose-lose situation with some people no matter what he does.

your right those extra 2 fights would help his popularity. but people will always find something to under estimate calzaghe's work.

Yep...the fans have never really taken to him, especially the majority of the American fans. He never used to get any support from British fans...and every bout that went by, you had boxing commentators asking before hand whether he was slowing down, past his prime, etc. The Lacy bout made him popular because he was the big underdog...and was also one of the best displays I've seen in a British boxing ring, just because he proved everyone wrong.

I hope he keeps his word and stays retired because a lot of people are never going to take to him...

DM was a LHW and Calzaghe was a SMW so why fight him? Still DM lost to Gonzalez who lost to Woods, who wasnt close to Calzaghes league

Jones was fighting at HW before Calzaghe had even beaten B Mitchell. Still Calzaghe beat Jones when he was a top 10 Ring LHW fighter

Ottke didnt want to fight Calzaghe, not Calzaghe not wanting to fight him

BHop backed out of fighting Calzaghe, you must know this, dont pretend it didnt happen.

Hill a non puncher who got beat by DM

G Johnson whos lost how many? Losing to Sheika who Calzaghe beat

Why should it? If Calzaghe had of beaten either he would have been critisised.
Bute hasnt beaten anyone of note
Dawson has beaten a LHW version of Adamek who fought Briggs to a SD and an old Tarver and G Johnson who looked like he may have won his first fight with Dawson, not exactly a great, when Johnson has been beaten by so many

i was at the jones fight and it was a joke. you're right: jones could take the hype job lacy. the same lacy who was his 2nd best win...puts the sad state of his legacy into perspective

    - This is the great thing about boxing - there are always conflicting and strong opinions to keep a discussion going on for years on end......

    - I think had Lacy not fought Calzaghe, Lacy would be seen with a lot more respect than he is now.

    - Calzaghe beat the best Kessler that there ever could be......even now.

    - And he also beat the likes of Robin Reid, Charles Brewer, Byron Mitchell and Richie Woodhall (al former champions).

    - But, he will justifiably receive criticism for not fighting the likes of Hopkins, Jones, and Toney in their prime years. This is a very strong criticism - and is what will hold his legacy back.

just a note bigdan, you're giving very fair and objective posts and arguments for calzaghe. you acknowledge his faults and praise his strengths and achievements. basically, you're the only calzaghe fan on this ****ing forum to show quality posting on the subject :)

I guess Roy should have never had to fight him then....G. Johnson was knocked out by Hopkins, who Roy beat.

Calzaghes career was as good as anyones. Noones career can stand up to scrutiny. Least of al some of the so called legends.

Because Dawson is a damn good fighter, and would be a great win for Calzaghe, over a prime fighter.

Depends what your definition of good is.

But yeah your right...people can look through almost every boxer in history's resume and find fault.
