Only two versions of Shkor. Pre war prospect who got lots of kos over local talent and post war fringe contender who got thrown to the wolves but also picked up good wins and gave good efforts in between losses. The Marciano fight was described as a noble effort. If its a matter of timing, Tyson has the edge in he caught Smith after his big win. But in reality, I don't see a huge difference. Smith a little more consistent.
Smith was coming off a pretty good string of fights and was a top three heavyweight. Shkor was more or less an "opponent" by that time.
Johnny Shkor was well enough regarded to face champion Joe Louis in a 10 round non title fight that was almost a real title fight in everything but name. AND Shkor lasted the distance surviving a knockdown. It even had a newspaper decision result reported next day. I think this could have went down as a title fight. This fight was around the time Joe Louis fought Walcott. Remember, the first Walcott fight was initially supposed to be an exhibition also, but because Walcott was well enough regarded it became a last moment title fight for real. Here is a link to a photo of that "exhibition" http://pictures.historicimages.net/pictures/_7/6861/6860118.jpg Notice how there is no head gear and the protector is worn under the shorts as in a real fight. both of them look like it is for real. Interestingly Marciano fought other big men. Humphrey Jackson was 254. Perhaps he wasn't a real fighter though. Big Bill Wilson was 229 and at least was a real fighter. Having 87 fights over 11 years. Big Bill went the distance with Cesar Brion, Danny Nardico, Gunarr Barlund so Lastarza and Rocky did well knocking him out. Bill Scored a lot of knockouts and fought as often as 17 times a year. James Pat Connelly was said to be a tall big 6'5" heavyweight for the day too. When he fought Rocky Joe Louis was as big as Sonny Liston.
I've corrected this statement once already ,why do you repeat it? Wilson was stopped with a cut eye, no ko ,no knockdown. its really dishonest to keep saying this sh*t.Wilson was stopped ten times! "The bout was stopped because of a deep cut over Wilson's left eye. Marciano concentrated on using his left hook in the brief fight. The crowd of 3,351 booed the quick ending because Wilson was a willing and strong opponent, but the fight had to be stopped because of the severity of Bill's injury. " Connolly wasn't even trial horse status, he had 21 fights and lost 9 of them, being stopped 3 times. Humphrey Jackson ? OMG! 254 Rocky Marciano 183 6 0 0 Rhode Island Auditorium, Providence, Rhode Island, USA L KO 1/6 This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected L KO 1/6 Rhode Island Auditorium, Providence, Rhode Island, USA time: 1:08 This content is protected 6 1948-08-09 257 **** Walsh 190 4 1 0 Stamford, Connecticut, USA L PTS 6/0 This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected L PTS 6/0 Stamford, Connecticut, USA This content is protected 5 1947-12-10 Archie Glisson 1 1 0 Orlando, Florida, USA W PTS 8/0 This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected W PTS 8/0 Orlando, Florida, USA Date uncertain, (TR348) This content is protected 4 1947-10-21 Wade Chancey 2 5 1 Fort Homer Hesterly Armory, Tampa, Florida, USA W PTS 6/6 This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected W PTS 6/6 Fort Homer Hesterly Armory, Tampa, Florida, USA This content is protected 3 1947-10-07 Billy Stallings 2 7 0 Beach Auditorium, Jacksonville, Florida, USA W TKO 1/0 This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected W TKO 1/0 Beach Auditorium, Jacksonville, Florida, USA Stallings, a Jacksonville vet, "hadn't fought in almost 14 years (TR Jan 1948) This content is protected 2 1947-09-30 240 Jimmy Kelly 220 1 2 1 Fort Homer Hesterly Armory, Tampa, Florida, USA W KO 4/0 This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected W KO 4/0 Fort Homer Hesterly Armory, Tampa, Florida, USA This content is protected 1 1946-12-10 Curtis Moore 2 0 0 Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA L KO 3/0
No I think he proved he could handle a SHW who was a fringe contender. I suspect he might be able to beat a better SHW.
Sorry, I was following what has been an long ongoing discussion in these parts rather than specific framing of the topic. I guess the way this would play out is Marciano toiling in the cruisers and jumping up for a one-off against a SHW. I wouldn't discount completely his chances against middling SHW's but the Shkor result tells us nothing.
Well then, yes, in a one-off rise to bigger foes, he can beat a sh*tty almost super heavyweight who is at the very end of an uninspiring career.
1. Shkor's record doesn't indicate he was much good, to put it mildly. 2. Of course Marciano would be able to KO some good big heavyweights, I can't get my head around the idea that some people have of how being smaller is an absolute and overriding disadvantage. I think people exaggerate in their own minds how difficult it is for a good 'short' fighter to land on a good tall fighter. It is difficult but in real fights it happens all of them. But in these fantasy fights people seem to envision "midgets" fighting "giants" and swinging at their ankles.
And that is something I never thought him capable of. It gets me wondering what the best big man is he could beat.
