Can Floyd hurt Pacquiao? I would never have posed a question like this before the Cotto fight. But Pacquiao was never phased by any of Cotto's shots which I found surprising. Floyd has a complete skillset and has always fought so smartly and conservatively that he hasn't needed to take unneeded risk in trying to take guys out. And he's certainly done the job on the likes of Hatton and Marquez. But he softened them up over time with the cumulative effect of a lot of effective punches. So in a scenario where Pacquiao presses the action early and Floyd needs to really back him off, does he need to do it with some power shots or does he jab and counter? And can Floyd hurt Manny early on?
Enough when he needs it. Also, it's a cliché but like they say, the punches that hurt the most are the ones you don't see. Floyd's quick, accurate, sharp, crisp counters might catch Pacquiao off guard and unprepared, but then again, Cotto hit him with some good left hook counters and he took them well. He can, but will he? I'm not sure. I don't think Floyd's power is significant in this fight. But he certainly has enough that Pacquiao can't just walk through everything he throws.
Mayweather's power shots are quick left hooks and right hand leads. Those actually are both effective against south paws, even though his defense is less than perfect when a south paw is fighting him.
Floyds Power = BHop's Power It might not knock you out but you'll feel it. Short compact, crisp punches to the body and head. I definitely feel he CAN ward of Pacquiao's attack
Floyd's KO ratio decreased as he went up in weight. 27 wins at SFW, 20 by way of KO. 13 wins above SFW, 5 by way of KO. He does not have the power to hurt Pacquiao but don't let that fool you. Mayweather can outbox Pacquiao and UD him.
floyd can hurt anyone he hits. he's a terrific counterpuncher, and can hit guys with shots they don't see. he doesn't have debilitating power, but his power is good. he doesn't open up enough, and that's why he doesn't knock people out. if he opened up & went for it like pac does, then he would have more KO's in my opinion. unfortunately, he's got a little bit of a yellow streak.
Joe Frazier went the distance with Bonavena twice. Ali was the only man to ever stop Bonavena. Punching power isn't the only thing that gets knockouts. Punching intelligence counts. Floyd's got it, in spades, and the speed that Cotto doesn't have. He has it in him to knock Pacquiao out. Anybody running in and saying ''If he couldn't knockout Marquez...'' is probably a very casual boxing fan lacking a nuanced understanding of anything. Pacquiao, similarly to Emmanuel Burton has an ability to force Floyd's aggression to ten, whereas the slower, weighed down, older Marquez couldn't. If Floyd is forced to maximum aggression, you get a very different game.
Punches that you don't see are the ones that hurt you, that's the cliché. Enough when he needs it, what exactly does that mean? Bottom line, Cotto has 75% KO ratio and even though he is more of an accumulation knockout puncher, he still punches way harder than Floyd. No other way around it, Floyd has 62% KO ratio. No matter how it is spinned, Floyd would labor hard to make Pacquiao feel his punches. That won't be his strategy, he'll focus on winning the rounds by ring generalship and defense. Pacquiao will try to walk him down. That's the beauty of this fight, if it ever comes to fruition. But don't try to big Floyd up by saying 'punches you don't see comin..' That's grasping at straws, and I don't see why a lot of lemmings picked up on it when it was foisted a couple weeks ago.
