Ok I mean generally, how do brit fighter do in America? Is there ever been a british fighter that was a US household name, the same way Tyson and Mayweather are over here? and I mean individual fighters too. How much respect do/did the following fighters get in the US? Lennox Lewis Ricky Hatton Naseem Hamed Joe Calzaghe David Haye
Lewis - Bood his entire career, gets a bit of respect now he has retired! That sets the anglaphobic tone for all British fighters in the US.
Lennox Lewis had grudging respect I feel. His two losses came against American opponents, which always seems to count against him. That said, he defeated Holyfield, Tyson et al, and deserves to be ranked highly. America hasn't seen the best of Ricky Hatton like we have over here. That is probably down to poor management as much as Ricky himself. They seem to admire his courage, but his actual boxing in the US hasn't been great (except Castillo, for obvious reasons), and he has done what is required to win. Naseem Hamed will be remembered for his arrogance, and the embarrassing performance against Barrera. I hated him, and refuse to talk any further. Calzaghe has little respect really because he has shown the Americans so little, by refusing (if thats the correct word) to fight over there. OK, he schooled Lacy, but someone was bound to in time, and his injuries (if thats what they were) came at the wrong time. To be honest, the Americans will know little of Haye other than the fact that he is a chinny, big puncher. Had a few fights over there, but not enough to capture the imagination of US fight fans. With his promoter though, he will fight in the US rather than Sports Network who refuse to take their guys abroad generally.
Lewis gets a lot of respect, deservingly. nobody knows who Calzaghe is. Hatton is now known for getting KO'd by Ring Post.....ironically Ring Post is very respected on the streets of America.
Lennox Lewis became a house hold name when he knocked out Tyson. Hatton became a house hold name when he got his **** rocked.
yeah he lost 116-111 and 115-112 X2 to an ATG, what a disgrace. it never fails to amaze me how people turn into utter ****s when discussing hamed and can't seperate the boxer from the man.
Coming from an American living in the New York Metropolitan Area, here's my take... Lennox Lewis was a great champion, and respected in the USA for fighting big fights against the best opponents available. Ricky Hatton was always looked at as a bit overrated when it came to competing with PBF, but I think American fans respect the fact that Hatton comes to fight THE BEST, and brings his fans with him. I certainly respect Hatton as a warrior, champion, and seemingly good guy. Nas was always a love/hate deal. Most of the guys I know didn't like him because he was arrogant to the utmost extent, and didn't back it up in the end. Also, he was an ******* for that whole car accident deal. Calzaghe has simply not proven himself the way the "Great" American fighters have. His resume lacks that of RJJ, Hopkins, Trinidad, Wright, Mosley, etc. I don't care if Calzaghe hasn't lost...his resume (especially about 1999-2006) looks like a calculated attempt to pad his record (in his prime), and fight unknowns. That is not respected in the USA. It is also the opinion of many Americans that the biggest boxing events typically take place in the USA...
because some people on this board talk as if naz was completely shut out, whitewashed. MAB was in control but it was interesting at times.
