How much weight did Armstrong & his contemporaries giv up when they went up in weight

    See the answer that McGrain gave 5 posts ago...a large number of fighters records on Boxrec are incomplete, so whilst it might appear that Wilde was fighting a debutant his opponent may have been a 40 or 50 fight veteran.

    I see, so boxrec is incomplete. Where can I find a better reference for boxing records?

    Nowhere.

    Boxrec is the one. What they have done is incredible. But there are still new Joe Gans fights being discovered. So imagine how incomplete a 1910 journeyman flyweight is going to be? If you want to take it to the next level you are basically talking about hunting down primary source accounts online or more on paper.

    Your best bet would be local newspaper archives, but that would be a lifes work...interesting thought though

    I guess this will be too hard to quantify. I was just thinking that the differences in fight night weight between modern and classic boxing ATGs are not that far considering that today, boxers balloon to 8-14 lbs after weigh-ins whereas before, the weigh-in was on the same day. So if for example, Pacquiao on fight night weighs in 148 and Cotto weighs in 158, that is not too far from Armstrong (142) vs Garcia (153.5). Also, we should also look at the skill level or record of those fighters that the old timers fought against when they had high weight disadvantages.

    The main thing to think about here is that Pacquiao-Cotto hasn't happened yet.
