I've got a full page of notes I wrote as I scored it, but I'll attempt to be brief. Winky was diminished defensively and condition-wise: he really didn't like those body shots in the 3rd and lowered his elbows enough for jabs to split his guard further and further apart, mostly abandoned the jab from the 4th on, sleepwalked for the first half of the 7th, and started drowning in the 8th. Despite that, I voted 70% on this poll. His eyes had problems early and PW kept tight control on distance, but WW still managed to land evenly with Williams, so I think his accuracy would look fantastic against a shorter fighter (i.e., one who can't potshot his eyes from a high angle) and occasionally countered well - a mean feat against Williams. I was probably too sweet on him for sustaining an offense at a rate I didn't think a prime Winky was capable of for nearly the entire fight. It took until the 11th for PW to figure out how to make the clinches look like Winky's fault (slip a glove under WW's elbow whenever Cortez came over for a look), so the intelligence was still there, but rusty. Ugh. I still gassed on longer than you probably wanted. Sorry. Basically, I like Winky's chances in the next one or two fights before a war makes it not worth continuing his ring career. He seemed much more respectful and grounded: intangibles I think will serve him well when sizing up the competition.
Thanks for your insight, FR, but - a "mean feat?" How much of Williams have you seen? Have you seen the Margarito fight? Margarito was moving in slow motion and he was landing every imaginable counterpunch on Williams the human body can deliver. Hitting Williams is EASY and always has been. The fact that Wright landed leads and counterpunches (whenever he did actually try and punch) was more than expected.
I meant more that when countering PW, you have to deal with the 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc. punches coming on top of it and already out of the gate. Not that he ever has his gloves in the right place to absorb counters, more like that countering him while flatfooted (while it won't get you knocked down) needs significant power to be worth it points-wise. His defense has improved since Margo, but not by all that much, true. Sometimes I catch myself judging a fighter's technique by how I would have (or, more often, how I wouldn't have) worked off it way back when.
i mean .... this is my opinion Winky Is Still Sharp Winky Still Has His Ring Generalship Winky Still WANTS TO FIGHT... he showed that by coming out in the final roudns and actualy trying to go for a ko Winky Still has his speed & strength i will continue to say that against 90% of 154-160 winky can win....
Why do you think Winky is still sharp, in general? And what percentage of that fight did Winky actually look sharp to you?
throughout the fight he showed me little things to make me believe that he can still be very dangerous.... his confidence - his awareness (ability to show that he was actually trying to his game plan which was to punch over pauls right hand )- his speed was still very in tact- his mobility- his eagerness to fight- his physicality.... i mean WINKY SHOWED UP TO FIGHT... he wasnt there for a pay day... he wasnt there with doubt in his mind... he REALLY BELIEVED HE COULD WIN THE FIGHT and he showed this until the final bell... paul just never allowed him to get comfortable.... and manny steward said this towards the end of the fight ... maybe the 9th or 10th... he said that he has watched winky his whole career and has not seen this much ferocity out of winky except in the jermain taylor fight and that it was one of winkys most ... i forget the word he used... but he was giving winky props for going hard but to me winky was good the whole fight to be honest... its not like he hit a wall and just got tired and quit after a certain point... it was just a really hard fight for him ... even as discouraged as he was at some points he was trying his hardest to stay in the fight..
On your next viewing, if you can bring yourself to do so, keep your eyes peeled on Winky the entire time. Try to think of everything bad that he does as bad, and everything good that he does as good. In other words; see the fight in terms of wanting to see Winky win - wanting him to do well. Then let me know if he lived up to that standard. Yeah, he provided some challenges to your peripheral viewing of what Paul was doing. I'm sure. But you probably didn't even actually look at what Winky was doing... There's no need to even answer, we all know we do this. Just watch Winky when you watch it again, if this interests you.
i watched to see all of this.... i watched winky just as much as i watched paul because after the fight i wanted to know for myself if winky was actually good or a washed up pos.... now im starting to think your asking me these questions to trap me.... you obviously think differently than me... so what did you see? a 50% performance from a washed up pos? edit: i mean honestly what the **** did you expect winky to do - he moves in str8 lines - he doesnt throw many punches - he is a counter puncher paul on the other hand - moves all over the place - throws 1000's of punches - dictates his own pace i mean i can watch the whole fight 1000 times upside & backwards... but honestly what could he do? you cant block & counter all of pauls punches the way paul fought last night you cant out gun paul... atleast not winky wright... maybe someone else... atleast the way paul fought last night the matchup was just a shitty ass matchup for winky - winky was in great shape - still fast - still strong - still willing - still aggressive - still ring smart i could see all these things from him.... i dont know why you couldnt
I'm not trying to trap you. What I saw in Winky was a guy who could not let his left hand go to the point that it made my brain ache. What I saw was a guy who was pushing almost all of his punches. What I saw was a guy who's legs had to be used so sparingly he could only bring himself to launch forward every two dozen intervals. What I saw was a guy who fought defensively over offensively 17-1. What I saw was a guy who had such poor timing he would start throwing his combinations (when he would actually throw them) too late almost every ****ing time. What I saw was a guy who showed fluctuating signs of being gassed from the 2nd round onward... Off the top of my head..
