How often should I be sparring?

    We've only been sparring once a week, and other weeks we may not spar. I feel like I'm being screwed over by not sparring 2-3 days a week, but my trainer says being in top condition and working on fundamentals is just as important.

    What do you think?

    I spar at least two times a week, but more if I can. How often you should is up to your trainer :)

    Your a newbie right? Why would been in fighting condition be more important then fine tuning the basics when your not training for a fight? You should conditionally spar most nights.... Its the only way your actual boxing can significantly improve.

    Not really a newbie anymore, been boxing for about a year. And getting ready for Golden Gloves next month :D

    Nothing will help you prepare for a match or tour like sparring imo. Both technical and realistic hard sparring. In our gym and especially approaching matches we'll pick it up to 3 times a week and increased rounds approaching. 1-2 weeks before feeling comfortable doing 9-12 rds per sess. Then last week before bringing it down to a realistic amount of w/e we are fighting to replicate that. 3x3. 4x2. 3x2. Whatever you'll be fighting.

    about two times a week used to spar loads but toned it down and i notice the benefits in my technique

    We used to do sparring once a week at my gym, I haven't been there in a few weeks because of semester break but the last week I was there my trainer upped the sparring a little more so that may be what will happen when I come back to the gym in 2 weeks.
    Yes, sparring somewhat sporadically like that allowed for more strategizing and focus on other things in between sparring sessions, but I can't really comment on how effective doing only light sparring does for you in an amateur fight, I'm still waiting on my first one.

    If it were up to me I'd spar 5 times a week, but for some reason guys always forget to bring their mouth guard with them to the gym so I only end up sparring a couple times every week.

    That's too much, that's like for football players to scrimmage 5 days a week and not lifting weights or running

    I never got to spar 5 times a week though.

    How often do you guys have heavy bag sessions? I try to limit heavy bag sessions to no more than 3 times per week.

    We spar every time, at my old gym we didn't even spar every week, was a joke and they were more into their thai boxing. Once a week maybe ok once you've grasped it but whilst you're still on a steep learning curve maybe more would be better. If you only spar on set days and you miss one of those days, then you may not have sparred for 2 weeks come your next session and you'll probably have forgot what you learned from your last one, this used to happen at my old gym I felt and I was more tense and nervous as we never got to do it enough in my opinion.

    I hate the heavybag, i only do it when forced too and at most twice a week

    4 times a week but most of it was done on sunday mornings

    at our gym we have the fighters sparring atleast 2 times a week, 3 most weeks sometimes more.

    Sounds like the gym I go to, I remember a couple times going 2 weeks without sparring.
    And we do heavybag work practically everyday at my gym, also double end bag, a round of mitt work, all in rotation.
