LOL so what we are all human beings wtf those that has to do with anything. Make a real point but to say we are all human beings makes no difference. We are talking about training methods to get in shape for different kinds of sports. And the point your girlfriend that you defend was making that all bodies function and react the same to certain types of training is not true at all.

so what this says is that if you have time to sprint intervals you would be better off sparring or working the bag.

also from my persional knowledge there are diffrent was to sprint intervals.

some people do this 15 second on 15 second off thing for like 6 mins, what this does is force you to your vo2 max at the end of all the intervals.

this 15/15 is great for improving ones VO2 max but has little impact on lactate acid threshold and as shown above vo2 max is of much lesser importance then lactate acid threshold.

now the other option is 2-3 min intervals with 1 min breaks at about 80% intensity. what this does is improve lactate acid threshold while slowing building up VO2 to near max at the end of each interval.

now since this does alot more for Lactate threshold while still workin to hit vo2 max 2-3 min intervals with 1 min breaks are the best option for boxing training. now you can sprint these intervals but youd probly be alot better off sparring or hitting the bag, you know things that boxers have been doing for centuries.

so in conclusion HIIT should be compared to Sparring and hitting the bag, not long slow distance running, and it is easily seen that sparring and hitting the bag are better options for boxing then interval sprinting.

so now what would be nice is some science showing how long distance running in say intervals of 1 mile at 6 mph 1 min walking 1 mile at 6 mph 1 min walking ect have an effect on lactate acid and heart rate as the above study you posted showed those to be much more important then VO2 max.

so as far as boxing being decades behind in training, it appears this study shows that boxing related activities that boxers have been doing for centuries like sparring shadow boxing and hitting the bag are actually some of the scientifically best exercises they could be doing.

another interesting bit of science to find out would be to see what a nice 4-6 mile jog does to lactate acid built up after a 1-2 hour gym session, it would be interesting to find out that it actually helps dissapate the lactacte acid improving recovery time.
