One thing I found interesting a well known NY trainer said Ortiz isn't a natural Heavyweight and that he was much smaller before juicing. Someone know the vid I'm talking about?? (Buddy Mcgirt or Richardsons gym maybe)
Lol!!!! True that, for Ortiz to reveal his age to Miller they'd have to have a deep convo. Likely not possible laungauge barrier
He's definitely older than 38, probably in his mid-to-late 40s. You can see the age in his face, and he has the middle-age sagging in his body, despite being in his best possible shape.
Lucas Browne - 38 Lenroy Thomas - 32 Tyson Fury - 29 Murat Gassiev - 24 Hughie Fury - 23 Nathan Gorman - 21 Daniel Dubois - 20 Plenty of the bigger boys look older than their age.
45 is closer to his real age. He looks mid 40s and he looks old even for your average cuban in their mid 40s.
He is actually older than his stated age, as are many other Cubans. However this should not be used as an excuse to bash Wilder, Ortiz is a high risk / low reward proposition and he is still a top 5 HW or thereabouts.
yeh but black dont crack, its a common saying - inferring he probably isnt old looking, rather actually old.
The discussion of Ortiz's age is just another way for people to insult Deontay Wilder. Few boxers look their age. Look at Riddick Bowe when he's fighting Andrew Golota. He looks like Ortiz looks now. And Bowe was only 27 years old at the time. When Bowe was fighting in Germany at 39, he looked like he was about 60 years old. Ortiz's age has been consistent throughout his pro and amateur career. Here's Ortiz in 2005. He's listed as 26 years old. This content is protected Here are some videos from the 2005 World Championships. I won't post them all. There was a very skinny Mike Perez (who was 19 going on 20). (About six and a half minutes in.) He's now 32. This content is protected And Ortiz was 26 (he comes up after the Perez fight). Ortiz is 38 now. This content is protected Odlanier Solis (who was 25 back then) was on that team. He's now 37. (Interestingly, they mistakenly post a graphic of Luis Ortiz's name when Solis is introduced and include Ortiz's age as 26.) This content is protected Gennady Golovkin fought in that tourney (link below). He'll be 36 in about a month. Matt Korobev fought in that tourney. He's 35 now. This content is protected You get the idea. The experienced guys - Solis, Ortiz, Golovkin - are all close in age. Perez, the kid, was like five or six years younger. There were no guys approaching 40 back then on the Cuban team (which Ortiz would've had to have been if he's nearly 50 now!!!!) The Cubans take their boxing much too seriously for that. And they have a glut of young talent to choose from that are always ready to step in. Also, Cuba has age restrictions for amateur boxing. The absolute oldest you can be is 32. You can't even be on the team after that. And if they keep you on the team that long, like they did Mario Kindelan or Teofilo Stevenson, you have to be like a three time Olympic gold medalist and someone very special. Ortiz was never the best Cuban heavyweight on the team. He was just a solid player. At 26, he was already approaching his "sell by" date and was going to be bumped for the next wave of Cuban heavyweights. He left Cuba in his late 20s.
He was a well known amateur and his age was consistent in amateur tournament after amateur tournament for years before anyone knew he was going to defect and need a "promoter." It's not like he appeared out of nowhere one day and nobody knew who he was.
BTW, Dan Rafael just said that Ortiz is probably a couple of years older than stated. He said he watched Muhammad Ali live on TV fighting for the world title as a kid, so he must be a couple of years older than stated. 2-3 year olds wouldn't remember that much.
