How on earth does Jermell Charlo make 154?

I was surprised when Spence looked a fair bit bigger than Brook at their press conference as I always thought Brook was a huge welter and would be fine at 154.

However this picture has been posted as Spence and Charlo are sparring partners and quite literally Charlo looks ENORMOUS compared to Spence. I am shocked.

He is skinny with big arms. Spence has tiny legs. Charlo has normal legs. Doesn't look like he has a big rear end (no homo). He just has very big arms.

    Have you guys finally clicked???
Jermell is slightly smaller than Jermall as well, and people say Canelo is a gigantic 154lber? The joke of the century if you ask me.

I always said Brook was a natural big welterweight and would be tiny at 154. Most of 147 came up from lighter classes which makes Brook and Spence look bigger than they are.

Look at the size of Jarrett Hurd he's freakishly big he could easily fight much higher, he's got the frame to fight at cruiserweight FFS.

I think the angle Charlo is standing exaggerates the size of his arm in the photo, still looks huge next to Spence though, who in turn looks bigger than Brook whenever they're pictured together. There is a poster @chitownfightfan who seems a big Brook fan and seems very confident not only about Kell's chances against Spence but also at 154 when he moves up. I hope he comes into this thread and gives an opinion on Brook vs Charlo as I remember he also liked the Lara and Hurd fights and sounded pretty knowledgeable albeit a touch biased in my opinion.

Another thing was I wanted to ask if anyone has heard any sparring stories about Spence/Charlo twins, I can't remember who or where I heard it but recall hearing that Spence really gave one of them too much to handle?

Didn't think Soence looked bigger, but did look a bit taller.

Brooks size isn't from being tall, It's from his build.

He's got big legs, big arms. He's much "thicker"looking than the average WW.

the guy got on the scales at 159 against GGG and was ripped

Don't know about Charlo but I read recently that Spence beat up on Hatley in one of their sparrings

@Limerickbox , I always notice Brooks massive, Pacquiao-like, cyclists legs whenever I watch him, his legs must be twice as thick as Deontay Spence's;)

Spence and Charlo have the same trainer, and Spence is using Charlo as his main sparring partner for Brook.

I'm a big Brook fan and have always maintained he would beat Spence, but sparring someone with the quality of Charlo who can replicate Brook's size/strength is going to be a big plus for Spence. Brook is probably sparring some Ingle fighters and who are no where near Charlo's level. A little worrying.

Spence didn't look bigger than Brook at all, just an inch taller. Brook looks bigger to me to be honest.

I've seen both Charlo twins in person here in Houston and they are both skinny as hell.

How do you see 154 going for him? Also, did the Golovkin fight change your opinion on this at all?

I placed a bet on brook at evens then a week later managed to cancel after swotting up on Spence Jr, I think Spence will be too much and the fact he is eager to come to Sheffield speaks volumes for his hunger and confidence. Can't wait for the fight.

I would have been 100% confident for a Brook win vs Spence before the Golovkin fight. Spence has caught him at the right time, coming back down in weight never ends well and I just think Brook and his camp don't rate Spence as highly as they should.

I think it's a 50/50 fight and if Brook can hurt Spence then the fight is his to take.

Brook has the skills to beat most at 154, but there are some absolute giant weight-cutters sitting there currently who won't move to 160 because of GGG.

I think Brook vs Canelo/Cotto would be competitive/close, I think Brook loses to Lara, I think he beats Andrade but loses to Charlo.

To be honest I don't really want to see any of those fights, if Brook beats Spence I want to see him vs Thurman and then Garcia/Pacquiao.

147-160 is only 13 lbs that's less than 6kgs, Brook is ripped to shreds @ 147 so it's not surprising he has some definition @ 160lbs although in comparison he was not ripped compared to what he looks like @ 147

Compare CEJ @ 160-168 which is still 8lbs and there is no noticeable difference at all
Brook @ the 30 day weigh in looked like a weight lifter @ 176lbs he was carrying far too much weight

You put any of the big 154lbers @ 176lbs and they look in great shape, even Spence would look decent @ 176lbs.
Kell is a big welterweight but it doesn't surprise me he's too scared to fight @ 154, his style is more effective as the bigger stronger bloke that's why Spence is going walk through him.

    1) I love how you guys are already making excuses for Brook, that shows great faith in the bloke
    2) 154lbs is stacked with giant weight cutters, most divisions are tbf but 154 is also a young division so maybe it is one of the worst for it
    3) These kids haven't even fought each other yet and some like Hurd and Jermell are new champs looking to make a mark @ 154, GGG has nothing to do with them staying @ 154. GGG is a terrific fighter but that's just delusional.

I'm not as confident of Brooks chances as you let on.
At 30, and weighing almost 180 in his last fight, boiling off the weight won't be nearly as easy for him as it is for Spence who says he's about 170/175 between fights.
The drain in and off itself if a 10% handicap if I was bookmaking for this one.
Then there's the orbital bone and the very real chance that he's not getting 100% from his sparring b/c of fear of re-injuring it prior to the fight, another 10% handicap.
Sizewise, I actually think they're about the same size, but I think Brook, should he have continued success into his mid-late 30s would reach his ceiling at 160 in terms of having a real shot at a Championship.
However, Spence seems to have a longer frame to work with and is leaner, meaning he could potentially see great success as high as SMW. Size is no handicap for either.
The skills advantage IMO, goes to Brook as does the experience obviously. And he's been pushed to the limit a couple times and has an A level win.
But while Im leaning Brook, I only have him as a slight favorite.....maybe 60/40 tops.

As for the Brook vs Charlo....I was referring to Mellow in that p4p thread. He's about 15lbs lighter than big Mallow, pictured, and FWIW, Im a fan of Mallows, Brooks, and Spence's.

I don't believe Brook could beat Mallow, and I think Mallow is gonna get a crack at GGG next yr. That is unless GGG has both broken BHops record, and FULLY UNIFIED the 5 titles.

I personally think GGG will prefer to move N for DeGale, Zurdo, Chudinov and the like than continue to hold the MW division hostage.

I think Mallow is the heir there, or one of them, as Lubin and Spence will likely wins titles there soon after GGGs departure.

Not a fan of Mellow, and if Julian Jackson can SCHOOL him, hurt him etc......Brook would ruin him.
    Same for Lara.
I think Andrade v Brook is probably the toughest fight ATM for either, and Lubin ofc is coming on strong for anyone who wants some. But at just 21/22?, it's likely a bit early for him to be fighting punchers at the A level and should look for his title shot vs a B level puncher type like Smith, as did ol Yeller or vs other defense minded fighters like Trout, Mellow, Lara, and Andrade if he's gonna go straight after a title. Hurd would probably stop Lubin ATM. As would someone like JRock inspite of his chin deficiency.

Hurd vs Brook would be a good fight, but if GGG couldnt put Brook down, and Hurd took some of the shots Golovkin did.....it would be lights out. Same for Harrison, Rock, Martirosyan etc.
