Chris Eubank has OPENLY come out since his retirement and said he didnt wnat to fight Jones bacause he wasnt sure he'd win. He said it in an interview on THIS SITE about a month back. It actually made me like the guy a little bit fr being so honest.
He was the original self promoted fighter. Didn't want anything to do with corrupt ass promoters like Arum and King. Nonetheless, he was sponsored by Nike and appeared in commericals, made a album complete with music video. Not near the crossover start Tyson was, but known in the sports world nonetheless. De La Hoya was the cross over guy because he was a pretty white boy promoted by the best in the business and brought a huge mexican fan base. He was half the fighter Roy was though.
Eubank didnt want to fight him at any point during his prime. Never. Everything else is just rumour. Ill repeat Chris Eubank HIMSELF admitted he never wanted to fight Roy Jones. If any offer was made,im sure it was so extreme that he knew Jones would turn it down. Chris Eubank said that he felt he wouldnt be able to beat Jones and as such didnt want to fight him. Eubank did however say that as he got older and later in his career, that he was more open to fighting people like Jones. But when he was Prime, he didnt want any part of Jones.
Eubank had no choice in 96 due to his tax Problems. The guys Eubank wanted no part of were Toney and McCallum. Jones talks Eubank: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...retirement-as-pressure-builds-up-1578117.html
"Prime" Toney was weightdrained when he fought Jones. "Prime" Hopkins? Hopkins was still green when he fought Jones, he wasn't nearly the fighter he became later. And you want to tell me that those are better wins than Manny vs Barrera, Morales etc.? And yes, RJJ fought bums most of the time, just bc they were ranked Top10 at the time doesn't mean they weren't bums. He fought school teachers and policemen, get your facts straight. Eubank I don't know, but both Benn and Michaelczewski had a good shot of shattering that china-chin, and he knew it. And there were more. Rocchigianni, Nunn, McClellan, Collins, Calzaghe...He didn't want to go anywhere near those guys, instead he fought Cans for Millions and his excuse was "They are my mandatories, I don't have any choice.". Thats pathetic.
Hopkins and Toney are lightyears better than anyone Pacquaio's faced. Hill, Reggie Johnson, McCallum and Tarver are probably better than the shot to pieces Morales Pac beat and lost to, after all that Morales lost every round to Raheem. Jones in total beat something like 25 world champions Darius, Rochiagani, Eubank and Benn all turned down offers to fight Jones. Collins and Jones had agreed to fight but Collins got ko'd in sparring and retired. As it is he beat men who beat Benn and Collins. Calzaghe was a nobody back then and couldn't shatter Jones chin when Jones was a zombie. McClellan was
Oh give me a break!!! A 5'9 Toney was weight drained at 168??? He was middle weight champion only 2 years previously! The guy should still be able to make 168 if wasnt such a slob! Hopkins was 28 years old, had been a pro for 4 years, and had fought 23 fights, winning 22 in a row since his debut. But he was "green" Ok....sure.
Collins v Jones would have been great. I remember being a young kid in Ireland wanting that fight to happen. Collins apparently had a brain scare and decided to retire unfortunately.
At the time, it was understood pretty much universally that he was the most natrally gifted fighter around, but tht's not the same thing as being popular. With the exception of probably his hometown area (I'll take the other poster's word for that), his crossover appeal was very muted. He didn't have the personality and in the ring took too few risks for people to really latch onto him as a big star.
