Rightfully so...Michaelczewski was 10 times better than that hypejob, why would anybody care about that clown when we can also watch the No.1 in the division? Why do you think RJJ avoided him like the pest? The Tiger was lineal champ but RJJ didn't want anything to do with him. RJJ also ducked Rocchigianni because he was scared. Benn, Eubank, Calzaghe? I could go on and on...RJJ is the biggest joke ever, nobody in europe takes that pos serious like you brainwashed monkeys.

he was fairly popular....but in my memory, during the early to mid 90's the popularity stuck with Tyson, from the talk of his release from prison, to his comeback fights.....despite being incarcerated for so long, and being a shot fighter, his popularity overshadowed all other fighters.

RJJ was probably as popular in the US, as Hamed was in the UK

Hamed was much more popular in Germany than RJJ, all his fights were shown on the ppv-channel "Premiere" and he had a lot of fans here.
RJJ was known as the paper-champ that ducked Michaelczewski and Roccigianni.

On the scale to 1-10 he was probably around a 7. Which is really a damn shame especially when considering how great and amazing he was. He should have been around a 10 he's a once in a lifetime talent. More naturally talented than PBF or Pac combined and arguably the greatest athlete to step foot in a boxing ring.:deal

Eubank said that in his prime, he wanted no part of Jones because he taught he couldnt beat him.

He actuall said those words. He tried t get Jones in the ring later in his career, but by that sage had been beaten by Collins twice, and the fight wasnt worth maiking for Jones.

**** off you disrespectful sonofbitch. RJJ is 10x the fighter Michaelczewski was and will go down as history as such your opinion of him is irrelevant the man is a ATG and a top 3 fighter of his era.

You obviously do not live in the U.S. nor did you during the 90s.

RJJ was huge here. He had Reebok sponsoring him, was name dropped in multiple rap hits, and fought in Radio City Music Hall.

RJJ was bigger than Slappy could ever imagine. Simply put, to this day he would get recognized more often on the streets of every country on Earth other than England.

I would say these were the THREE non HW boxers that the average person had at least heard of.

Oscar, Julio, and RJJ, in that order.

It basically comes down to how hard the networks promote their fights. They promoted Roy pretty hard, as he deserved. RJJ didn't just win, he was the type of fighter who almost ALWAYS gave a spectacular show. Networks like that.

i feel like a lot of people responding weren't even around in the US in the 90s

first of all, roy's "defeat" in the '88 olympics was broadcast on regular network tv -- the only place where you could watch the olympics was one channel -- and most sports fans watched the olympics. when he aligned himself with the air jordan brand and was releasing albums and playing professional basketball and participating in a fight on the same day, he was on espn all the frickin time. the fact that keanu reeves and al pacino go to watch a roy jones fight in devil's advocate just proves his level of fame: pacino says they're going to watch roy and no explanation is necessary. everyone who was a sports fan in america knew who roy jones was. granted, today, every sports fan in america knows who pacquiao and mayweather are, so i'd say he was on that level here.
