If you slow it down to 1/4 speed it’s easier to observe. Makes the commentators sound drunk (some actually are sometimes, lol) so you might want to turn the volume down. I get 3 out of 4 landing, the last punching missing. If you look at the other combos in the highlights, Ray is actually landing and landing solidly. Also, it’s no smoke and mirrors effect when Ray is punching, Marvin isn’t punching back - instead trying to cover up. IF Ray hadn’t already set the tone and gained respect with other, earlier shots, why would Marv cover up? Why didn’t he just punch through Ray? I believe Hags claimed Leonard’s punches weren’t sh*t but Marvin’s reactions don’t support that claim. Marv would only start to try and punch back when Ray had finished his combo - by that time Ray was already moving away - so Hags himself was unable to score back. I’ll grant that a connected punch shouldn’t score more just because it looks flashier - but there was no illusion to the fact that Leonard landed plenty of scoring shots, imo. Also, Leonard should’ve been warned for the low bolo punch. Of course I wouldn’t score that punch but it would add insult to injury if the judges did - a double whammy that isn’t addressed all that often when talking foul punches - particularly ones that are repeated throughout a fight. I know some people won’t like this but technically, Frazier landed a lot of targeted foul shots to Ali’s hips (below the belt) - which make no mean contribution to fast tracking a fighter to impaired mobility. Post exile and rusty Ali’s mobility was already deteriorated in its own right and I would confidently guess Joe was scored for each and every of those hip punches for compound interest.
Careful, Some dope will tell you it is pure speculation to start a fight, what a sad homelife for that chap. Ha Ha.
the first punch it misses. mere slap at Hagler's glove. Hagler has it covered and half parry it. but it is well short of target anyway. no chance of scoring. the second punch is up for debatable. not a solid shot any way, but at least some cuff at Hagler's head. yes you can call that a " shoeshine ' ' . whether you do weigh it much as a score punch is up to you. I'd half a punch more probable. the third punch connects well. Good scoring punch. the fourth punch misses. clearly Hagler ducks inside it and it loops off round pass the back of his head. question of if Hagler stopped punching or smiled and why. or missed with his own shots or didn't retaliate at all or why didn't he do whatever . or what he says after fight. no. is not relevant. he does not lose or win points for smiling. & nor does the other guy. you talk ' particular on point combo " but I see him score 1 good punch out of 4. at full speed, half speed or quarter speed. Hagler making Leonard miss is not even a note here. but Leonard back away & hold & this is recognised as good defensive ? this is a problem of scoring boxing match. a lot of the detail is not noticed. the boxers with economy moves & good fundamental solid skill is sometimes at disadvantage. thr boxer run around ring & throw flash ' pot shot ' grabs more audience attention
Ah yes, the old, randomly played “that’s speculation” or “that’s just your opinion” card. I know it well. AS IF the player of said card is oblivious to the fact that 95% of what is written in CLASSIC is speculation/opinion - including all their own, prior, opinion based posts. In counter, I play the “No Sh*t, Sherlock?”card - “It goes without saying. And your point is…?” “Yes, exactly. We simply have different opinions. But thanks for playing”. Hahaha!
I already described the detail as I saw it. No point rehashing the 4th punch, we already both agree that it missed. But you’ve now added giving Hagler credit for the miss - no, Ray missed in his own right - it wasn’t anything Hagler did. 3 out of 4 is acceptably ON POINT. As were several other combos in the highlight. Prime Ali himself was rightfully lauded for his multi punch combos - even though it didn’t require every punch being landed. In the case of “shoeshine”, less solid punches or even misses can set up the landing of solid punches in the same combo - via distraction and obscuring of the opponent’s view. I also included Hagler’s reactions to Leonard’s actions. Very much relevant and supports my observations. Ray clearly came off the better - Hagler landed zip. You’re seriously questioning the legitimacy of backing away and temporarily holding as a defensive move - which did, in effect, prevent Ray from being landed on? Hmmm. Like I said, if Ray hadn’t already established a sting to his punch via numerous other connections (not misses) then no reason for Marvin to just only laugh - he should’ve ALSO been punching through that “pretender” Leonard - that it he didn’t do same speaks volumes. Perhaps you might want to watch fights more closely yourself. Both eyes open.
From what I've seen I rate Haglers rt hand as thr harder punching hand easily. Yes he did start looping the rt hand more as he got older. I remember Gil Clancy also mentioning that in the Mugabi fight
