I don't think he had 84 inches reach but he had oversized hands for his body is easy to notice sonny was very gifted , and about his age I think he was a bit older but not that much

Without definite facts on the blinding which you have none, you’re free to choose your own narrative in boxing history. Only a few guys know the utter truth of it and it’s not me or you.

I’m choosing to believe a criminal can act unethically in a violent business.

The blue section : Your obsessive hatred of Liston keeps growing with every post.

The green section : I referred to the Bethea fight as evidence that Liston had decent hand-speed.To say that in this fight Liston '' moves like a lumbering mammoth '' is utter nonsense.
I recommend you book an appointment with Specsavers.

The red section : Er yessss.....we all know what Machen said.We do know that. However Machen's
immediate excuse after his defeat to Liston was an injured arm.Why on earth didn't he refer to his
' blinding ' until a very long four years after that fight took place ? Because it is so blatantly obvious that
Machen was trying to capitalise on the controversy surrounding the Ali fight. This is just common sense.
I see you're still disagreeing with the great Angelo Dundee.Again, and this is so painfully evident,
look at the Machen vs Liston fight and you will see that there is no way Machen's eyes were affected by
any illicit substance. Why do you keep overlooking something that's so damned obvious ? Seriously, why ?

The pink section : So you want proof that Liston had torn his shoulder-tendon during the Ali fight
and fought with a broken jaw ( against Marty Marshall ) for six rounds ? I suggest you look up
Wikipedia, where you appear to have sourced your quote in yellow letters.Shouldn't be too much of
    a problem.

The orange section : Liston was of course managed by the Mafia,as were several other top boxers.
However since you are always demanding evidence that will validate my views why don't you produce
indisputable evidence that Sonny was really, actually, genuinely a leg-breaker for the Mafia.I await with
great anticipation.Oh no,Sonny Liston actually drank alcohol and used drugs ! You do realise this was
a familiar narrative that has affected innumerable people from all sorts of backgrounds.I do hope I haven't
shattered any of your innocent delusions.

    Machen fights Liston
    Tumbleweed
4 years later Ali beats Liston and something gets in his eyes for a round
Machen - That happened to me too!!!!!!
    Kamikaze - I BELIEVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also Kamikaze - You’ve spent a whole post posting your own maybes with no real evidence.

You just said it - without definite facts.

The burden of proof was on Machen.

ALL you’re running with is Machen’s claim. NOTHING else. You simply want to believe the claim, hang the facts otherwise.

A claim made 4 years after the fact of their fight. A claim not coincidentally aligned in its timing with Ali’s accidental blinding in Miami 64 - later qualified as accidental by Ali himself and his own cornerman Angelo Dundee.

Why don’t you ask your the obvious critical questions here - WHY did Machen wait until 64 for his big reveal?

Your evidence of blinding is that Machen backpedaled? Whaaat? He ran. He did that for the whole fight - lest Liston KO him.

Ali only notably backpedaled during round 5 - aligned with the visible evidence that his vision was clearly impaired.

So, 1 + 1 = 2, no problem there. Something clearly got into Ali’s eyes - no narrative required.

All Eddie had was a narrative. His own, no one else’s. 4 years later. No evidence otherwise.

His own, one man, “Me Too” movement - but, as the appalling lack of evidence strongly suggests - he was simply making a false band wagon jump.

Only they know for sure, you present a good argument I disagree and it can’t be taken any further.

True. Eddie did have a burning fever…and the only cure for it was more cowbell. Oops, wrong premise…

Well then, Eddie’s corner should’ve administered him some Anti-Listomines. :risas3:

If you wouldn’t mind DWC, when you’ve picked yourself up from the floor after rolling around laughing your *** off at my champagne comedy. please feel free to “like”.

Even if it’s a pity “like”, I’ll take it.

I personally believe he was born in 1928, not anything in his 40's.

For his reach it is probably in that area of 80'-82', Liston was 6'1 and had a orangutang-arms to knees- build.

Liston was always a choice “fall guy”, wasn’t he?

Look at the mess in Lewiston Maine, multiple players involved contributing more than their fair share to the chaos, not least Ali himself.

The smoke clears, and it defaults to “Bad, criminal Sonny - all his fault”. Lol.

Amazing how some people hold Liston’s life outside the ring in such pious, high judgment - even when it’s not even part of the conversation.

Walk a mile in Liston’s shoes, particularly during his formative years, then come back to us.

He who is without sin may cast the first stone -

Well, I’ve got my rock in hand, ready to throw, NOT. Haha.

I’m not bothered about Sonny’s reach being wrong. Whatever the measurement we can see his arms are longer than they should be for his height. So he had long arms. The measurement doesn’t matter.

his age matters. But that’s all been cleared up by the census.

I can clear up some of this. The 80.5 inches was his reach, but the 84 inches was from when his John Thomas 1 was fully unfurled. Have you ever seen those Dac-5 fiber garden hoses? It was like that only much, much more so. We have a poster here who was actually named after this.

Sonny had sausage fingers. A finger tip to fingertips measurement is corrupted by those whoppers.

he could wear a wrist watch on his pinky.

The guy had long enough arms anyway. You guys are arguing about long fingers.

Is it true that the phrase "could suck a golf ball thru 30 feet of garden hose" originated from Sonny and your good self but actually became shortened over time for convenience from "could suck a golf ball thru 30 feet of Dac-5 fiber garden hose"?
