I've been interested in getting involved in the sport, but at first working on my fitness. When competing with the headgear on do you still feel the blow alot and can you get quite buzzed up when competing.

i always found it worse sparring with head geat than without.

No one is going to tell you its safe. Getting punched hurts ! But you do get used to it. Long term damage reports are always different but i would take boxing's risks over some sports that are taken for granted as "safer". Iv seen far more horrible injuries in 5-aside football and heard about a hell of alot more in rugby. At least in boxing you know someone is trying to hit you in the head that is the aim of the game and you prepare yourself to defend.

Unlike my mate who scared us all when he got knocked out in a game of rugby and ended up in hospital with amnesia

Yes, you can still get buzzed or even KOd. It's harder though because it does provide some cushion. Headgear though is there to prevent cuts, especially from (accidental) headbutts. It won't cushion the blow much but there is some protection. When sparring you shouldn't be getting KOd anyway, if you're getting buzzed a lot ask your partner/coach to slow it down. During competition of course you're in danger of getting buzzed or stopped too but less so than at the pro level where there's no headgear and smaller/different gloves.

    :huh

It's very safe, although injuries do occur. Eye injuries happen, nose breaks, teeth come out.

it is safer than football, rugby, hockey and lacrosse.

you can still get wobbled/knocked out and you still feel the hits to the head, but its just a padded fist hitting you. you arent getting form tackled by a guy running full speed or slammed into the boards by a guy sliding on ice at 30mph.

the only real risk is not taking enough time off after getting knocked out.

when sparring i found it felt worse taking blows with the head gear on than not. when you have head gear on it feels like a concussive dull thud where when i didnt have it on it didnt feel nearly as bad + you have more mobility head movement wise!

Iv never looked into it properly but iv heard quite a few times there is a bit of research into the fact that head guards actually make blows worse. You add more mass to your head, the more force can be acted upon it. Although this sounds pretty sketchy at best! :think

I have played baseball football hockey track and cross country, and i have gotten hurt less in 6 years of boxing than in any of the other sports i competed in. I got a deviated septum my 3rd fight but a broken nose is something so small as opposed to tearing two legiments in my ankle. probably 3 or so concussions, and stress fractures let alone takin a baseball to my face.. amature boxing is about as safe as it gets in sports

Studies have actually found that since boxing gloves themselves came into how we know them, boxing related deaths increased. Since their hands became padded, fighters could throw at your skull without breaking their hands like they did in the bare knuckle days. the hazard is pretty much always going to be the snapping motion of the head and neck but the padding on the headgear could make it more of a push and not so much a snap if they get you on it. uppercuts and the like won't help but still. you're safer than rugby, that's for sure.

yes but i think the thinking behind it is that in the same way gloves allow you to hit harder without breaking your hands, the head gear allows you to take more concussive blows without a clean K.O

not my idea and like i said it sounds sketchy to me! Competition you wouldnt catch me without headgear! Or even serious sparring. All i know is once my headgear came loose and fell off but i wanted to finish the next 2 rounds and the shots i took didnt feel as bad! and i was able to move my head much better and see better!

I've already read of 3 deaths of teenage high school kids this summer while practicing for football that I know of, and likely more that I've not heard about.

When sparring in boxing, you have head gear and much heavier padded gloves than used in the actual amateur fights. I think boxing is a pretty safe sport overall and a hell of a way to get into condition if taken seriously.

Some amateur gloves are actually very well padded, they do as much as possible to discourage power punchers.
