This article is inspired by a recent discussion on another forum callin ginto question Floyds legacy if he were to quit now without fighting Manny. What would his legacy anf status be? Look as usual some of this debate is mind numbing in its simplicity! The truth is that Mayweather has a very good cast list of opponents on his CV, how can it not be so when he has at least 14 EX OR AT THE TIME CURRENT BELT HOLDERS ON HIS RECORD!!!
Now we can be churlish and say he doesn't have the Hearns/Hagler, ATG vs ATG type fights. However how many fighters in the all time great category are blessed with such encounters? Does big Larry holmes have such a fight for example? Then we have another category of ATG. They have big names on their CV but the veracity or worthiness of these wins are questionable due to the deterioration of the opponent. So for example DLH has a finished Chavez and an on the slide Sweet pea on his CV (and many including myself felt sweet pea won!). Infact DLH's record bears comparison to Floyd's. Very similar in having a cast list of very good contenders and people who held belts. DLH has the losses, Floyd doesn't. DLH's legacy is based to an extent on being a multi div champion same as Pac and Floyd. On this barometer alone both Pac and Floyd's legacy at present are intact and put them in the ATG category. The final judgement is the asthetic one for the lovers of the technicalities of the sport. Has a boxer innovated or moved the sport foward technically, like a willie pep, beau jack, jack johnson, burley or Archie moore; or have they exhibited a brilliant all round technical ability in most facets of the sport, like a Robinson, Hagler, Duran etc. By this judgement Floyd definitely will go down as a standout technical exhibitor of the sweet science. When an over blown ego like Ray Leonard marvels at Floyds timing and simply says he is th best watcher of an opponent he has ever seen, these are very high accolades.
LEGACY SECURE..... ATG status and HOF beckons!

Anything below 140, he was easily one of the best. But anything above, he's been fighting either old or smaller opponents, except maybe DLH which was one of his best wins, but even then you could argue DLH was already on the decline. He has been scrutinized and rightfully so in recent years. His talent alone marks him as HOFer, but his character in and out of the ring as of late is going to make a dent in whether he is seen as an ATG.

If he takes the Pac fight, and schools him, he is easily an ATG.

Can we please refrain from the outside the ring stuff in judging his boxing legacy..... unless we start deducting points of Ali, Johnson, Duran and the list goes on!!!!

Every atg has a career defining fight (most of the time they win). Leonard had Duran, hearns, and hagler for example he wasn't always the favorite and he had to dig deep to win. That's what boxing fans remember, not mismatches and easy victories. Without pac Floyd will be remembered as the equivalent to a meldrick Taylor, a guy who had all the tools but failed at the top level. Not by losing to the biggest threat of his era but by not fighting him at all.

he certainly has not failed at the top level if he is still considered the very best P4P for some and a easy 2nd for the rest...not to mention he has been regarded as a top ten P4P guy for an extremely long time now...surely that doesnt equate to failing at a top level when you have beaten a dozen plus former or current champs and belts in numerous weight classes....is he the GOAT of course not but an ATG....i dont see how he gets left out.

Pac's not the biggest threat....Martinez is

Floyd's great accomplishments are overshadowed by controversy and the pac situation. Twenty years down the line he will be remembered for avoiding pac. There have been alot of fighters with alot of accomplishments but not making the biggest fight in history will never be forgotten.

I see floyd a bit as pryor, He has the skills but lacks the potential resume. Still a atg but his resume will be picked apart, best wins old mosley over the hill hoya by sd or a guy like corrales. thats not going to cut it.

If Floyd loses to ANYONE, A, how damaging will it be to what you mention above?

Many people feel that Manny is Floyd's defining fight right? What if Floyd outclasses him? Would he still not be an atg? Imo Floyd has been an atg. Where you rank him is your opinion. A fighter that was top 10 P4P for a decade, 2 time fighter of the year, number one P4P before he retired, and a six time world champion in 5 weight classes. O yeah he is undefeated. I ain't no ***** but that sounds like a atg to me. PS. He also beat 15 world champions.

I was the one who brought this up in the other thread. So let me say this...he was great in the lower weight divisions, nobody is gonna take that away. But it's very hard to ignore the fact that he has avoided the top WW's in his time. He had a great opportunity to fight and undefeated Cotto, take on a red hot Margarito, and a younger Mosley. Now I'm not gonna put all the blame on Floyd for those fights not happening, but he should've had some of those fights under his belt.

Also the argument that he is still easily p4p in people's list, here's what I have to say about that. Floyd's skills are very good in hypothetical fights. If you look at the threads here about a hypothetical fight for Floyd he ALWAYS wins. That's the only reason people put him so high up in a p4p sense.

It's such a shame Floyd doesn't have the courage or the confidence to put his skills into actual fights. He could've been so much more, but now he is just a shameful human being and a coward of a boxer. People will never live it down if he continues to duck Pac until either one retires.
