Well yeah... of course all that was 4 years ago and he hasn't fought anyone worth mentionning since then. He could be more shot then anyone could imagine at this point. I just wanted to point out that he was actually a pretty decent fighter back in the days. People only remember that he was KTFO by Trinidad but they forget that he won the first two rounds of that fight pretty easily and made Trinidad look pretty bad.

Joppy was a decent contender in his prime, but he's shot now, and unless Bute is grossly overrated, he will dispose of him easily and probably early.

Unfortunaty Bute has not dispose of anyone early in quite some time.

Damn you're right. And I watched that fight like 2 weeks ago. Damn I guess I'm getting old. :patsch

But from what I remember Joppy was winning that round easy until Trinidad landed the big punch. Then again maybe that is a fruit of my imagination too. :rofl

Nope you are right about that. Joppy won the first couple minutes but he got hit hard and decked so he lost the round and was in big trouble. he recovered well and won round 2 if I remember right.

Joppy is SHOT. Only reason Bute is fighting him and not some other good journeyman is that Joppy is American and some older fans have heard of him because he used to be a decent fghter. Bute wanted to fight Green - who didn't want the title shot. Everyone except for Kessler, whom Bute is ducking because he isn't ready for him yet, was busy doing other things or didn't want it...so we're stuck with Joppy.

Since Bute wants to gain some more experience in order to improve, this year, I am expecting him to let Joppy give him all he's got for at least a couple of rounds. It's unlikely Bute could get a much better and more experienced sparring partner than a Joppy who plays his last card. However, I also expect Bute will want to impress and will go for a rather swift stoppage...so...I am expecting a mid-rounds stoppage.

I have the feeling this will be a bit like the Froch v. Reid fight. Reid gave Froch a lot to think about in those rounds, and Froch didn't put his foot on the paddal going for an early stoppage. Hopefully, Joppy will come to test Bute and will provide a useful learning experience. Hopefully, he will be less shot than Reid (his recent record would support this hypothesis). Only reason I'm watching the fight is because I want to see whether Bute's defence has improved or not. If Joppy tests it, even for just a couple of rounds, it should be enough for us to determine whether it has improved or not. I am looking for quality from Joppy, not quantity; he is old and shot.

Bute wont look good unless he stops him. He has nothing to gain from fighting Joppy ast this stage, maybe a few years back, when he was the regular WBA champ at 160 but not now.

Even if he does stop him, he might not look good if that defence is leaky...:verysad

Mid 90's? Joppy was a real threat in his division for a long time up till 1999-2000...he was up there with the Keith Homles and Bhops of the division although we all know who the MW king was....but Joppy was a very solid fighter and decent champion. He would have whooped Bute in his prime.

Anyone who think Joppy in his prime was a bum need to get their facts straight. He was one of the leading middleweights for years, and only lost to the biggest names!

I think he lacked the fighters mentality but he had plenty of skill and was definately a world class operator.

He got dropped and hurt in the first round. He won the third round pretty big, but we all knew it was only a matter of time.
