Not the same.. Lewis had let himself go , was unmotivated and took the fight on short notice. Wlad was switched on 100% , was fully prepared and in the best shape he could be against Fury. He took Fury more seriously than Lewis took Vitali. If Lewis was in the same condition physically and mentally as Wlad was , he wouldn't have struggled as much as he did. He still managed to get the win on sheer heart and determination , something Wlad never had even during his best years. You'll notice the same guys who claim he was shot are the same guys who claim he "figured Fury out" in the 12 round. If you're shot you're shot. You don't magically turn prime again in the late rounds. They also claim he would have won the rematch. They're just Wlad fanaticals who can't deal with the fact he lost , thats all. When you're as disciplined and dedicated as Wlad was , you can retain you're prime for longer. Wlad was prevented from pulling the trigger against Fury the same way Gassiev was prevented against Usyk. He'd have the same problem no matter what his age was cos styles make fights and Usyk and Fury would always be a problem for Gassiev and Wlad.
I’ve been reading the thread and their are some valid points on how to interpret the meaning of shot. Wlad was far too disciplined between fights to be shot like say Stiverne or even better Arreola for he last several years. So maybe shot is too harsh a word. He was still competing against top level opposition something a shot fighter can’t do, he was clearly way past prime though. As I said I was at the Jennings fight and he just wasn’t taking advantage of the openings presented. He struggled to pull the trigger against Jennings, he couldn’t pull the trigger against Fury, - he looked better against Joshua but Joshua was stationary and Wlad had a year off, maybe that helped. Still he missed with every left hook he threw in that fight. His timing, reflexes were in steep decline. So way past prime maybe more accurate terminology than shot. He was 39 when he faced Fury making his 19th consecutive title defense. There’s bound to be great diminishment at that age. Credit to Wlad for still being a tough out.
Using Mike Tyson as a scale, he was faded like Tyson for Golota/Savarese against Fury and was worse for Joshua. Using a Holmes scale, he a little worse than Holmes in the Spinks fights for Fury and more past it for Joshua.
Wlad become old overnight in the ring from the Jennings fight onwards. The Fury and AJ wins were against an old and over the hill Wlad.
He looked terrible and scraped past Jennings 115-113 on my score. The end of his peak was well before then (well before the Pulev fight, which most cite as his last great form and performance).
Jennings would be a legitimate argument if he never looked bad before that fight , but he did on multiple occasions so that point is kinda moot. He looked worse against Povetkin if you ask me. Imagine how many rounds Povetkin would have been able to take off him if the fight was in the States with the same ref from the Jennings fight? Maybe Povetkin would have got through and knocked him out like Brewster did. Both Brewster and Jennings had refs who made Wlad box without his huggy bear tactics. If Jennings had gone to Germany he wouldn't have been able to make Wlad look bad cos he would have been octapussed to death every time he entered his wheelhouse.
most people don't know this because it was kept mostly hidden but there's word that wladimir fought fury while being injured and nobody really knew until way past the fight. and the problem with wladimir in the joshua fight was that his timing was off and was just rusty, he should have known that it would happen and shouldn't have retired because he would have been sharper in the rematch and could have gotten joshua out of there this time but wladimirs problem is that he never really had any confidence in himself unlike vitali.
Wlad retooled after the Fury fight but he still was 5 years over the hill and inactive. Didn't stop him battering Joshua within an inch of defeat. Went out on his shield like a true atg.
green AJ smashed him up, even given the respect he yielded. But wlad was old true, and semi shot. He just had his punch and accumulated guile left was totally gassed out simply trying to avoid being smashed up...but it came surely as rain in Dublin.
Yep. The pulev fight masked his decline because he came straight at Wlad and forced the old warrior champ into a firefight. It is pretty obvious around Wach/Pianeta that Wlad started to decline. It was brutally confirmed that there would be no rebound after the Jennings fight. Wlad is not shot but massively diminished and has been for years.
no, he was floored once, got up, didnt get caught again. Wlad was floored twice, didnt get up. big difference. Whatever you claim of Josh, Wlad has it three times worse. I think Wlad was very unstrategic, wasting energy that he would have needed by dancing early on. Not smart tactically, I guess tactics and adjustment are never part of the Klitschko game.
