It seems like it's not very uncommon in this day and age. Guys like Brandon Rios and Adrien Broner are the latest examples that come to my head and they both were deducted a small percentage of their actual purse. Rios was slated to fight on a Showtime card just two weeks ago. Adrien Broner will probably be awarded more money and more fights on HBO while Escobedo will probably get brushed under the rug. How should fighters be punished if they happen to miss the contract weight? I've read numerous boxing scribes write from be banned from a TV network for a year, to an automatic loss, a huge pay cut (not a lousy 5-15%).
I think 80% of their purse should go to the opponent and if they refuse to fight (because of their purse going to opponent) their liscense should be revoked.l
Pay a big fine and sanctioning fees if a title is involved. That's without the fight happening. Also a percentage of their next fight should go to the opponent that they came in overweight with. Business will pick up and snacks will be put down.
Title Fight: Cannot win the title + Fraction of Purse Taken. Non Title Fight: No rise in rankings + Fraction of Purse Taken.
they already get their title taken away if they can't make weight some guys like Broner deserve to be spit on as well, the lazy bum didn't even try to make weight today, putting the fight in jeopardy for the fans
