How should the A/B side be determined?

I've seen a lot of debate over this and I feel there's holes in both arguments. Here's my opinion: A/B side should be determined by multiple factors, titles and accolades included. IMO, basing it solely on popularity can put the more experienced and proven fighter at a disadvantage at the negotiating table. I think A/B side should be determined on a "case by case" basis.

Generic example: Let's say we have a champ in the division, but he's "boring", his fights are a snoozer and he doesn't sell well. Then someone ranked #4 in the division comes along and is popular as hell. Does the #4 ranked opponent get to dictate terms just because he's popular? Or should the reigning champ?

Another note: WHO determines who's A/B side?

It should be based solely on popularity.

The one who gets lay down at the end of the fight is Beta.

A-Side is solely determined by popularity, aka ability to put asses on seats

casual boxing fans and mass media are the ones who determine who's the A-side

It's not up for real boxing fans to determine

Champion should always be the a-side.

If khan challenges brook for his title there's no way khan should get more money.

I agree it SHOULD work as you've said, reality though its weighted more in the favour of the guy who is popular and understandably so to an extent.

Views/ticket sales etc are what generate the cash and thats by far the most important thing to the fighters and their representatives when negotiating.

Example, Cotto dictating terms to Sergio despite Martinez being lineal MW champion.

If there was 1 title per class then I would say the champ dictates.

But since the titles are pointless then who cares about titles anymore?

And basing A side solely on popularity devalues titles even more. But I do agree that there are too many titles now.

The ship has already sailed though. It's a lost cause to try and revive something that is so far down the drain.

You have a point, but it's not practical.
