any technique becomes strong only in practice not theory. the art of fighting like floyd has taken his entire lifetime to master. how long do you think it would take for you to train someone to beat him.

I do train fighters, and I would venture to say my boxing IQ is higher then yours given I actually fought, and have trained two world champions and several contenders. Look how well old ass Oscar did with just his jab. Point MADE! I WIN!

Hes the best fighter Ive seen in about 15 years of following boxing, and probably as good as anyone but I agree with the topic starter about his cheap bitchlike cherry-picking persona. It only cheapens his legacy and image when if hes as good as he thinks he is (and probably actually is) he could face Pac, Marquez, Hatton et al without having to hobble them by bringing them up in weight etc.

Beating Floyd takes discipline, and a great jab. Period. End of story. The shoulder roll is an awesome defense. Keeps you well protected, baits your opponent into being overly aggressive which opens up counter punches. It also fatigues the guy on the offense because by nature almost all fighters blindly attack a stationary target.

if you really think that chico was that good, then you must be dumber than I thought, he was just towering over his opponents at 130, a guy almost 5'11" fighting at 130, that speaks a lot with his skills...
And by the way chico was struggling to make 130 when floyd fought him, he was drained trying to make weight...

This is a very good point. Floyd draws his opponents in with his shoulder roll/lean, at which point the opponent buys it, comes in, smothers their work and Floyd comes out of the side and opens up. Altenatively, Floyd times his opponent on the way in with one of the best lead right hands I have ever seen. Bearing these two points in mind, you can conclude that Floyd will never succumb to pressure - to pressure Floyd is to play right into his hands. You have to draw Floyd out of his shell and make him come to you - if you do that, you have half a chance of beating him.

In terms of skill, Floyd is simply up there with the best of his era.

Suprised some are ranking jones ahead of him and Duran for that matter. I love Duran but the guy relied more on strength , heart and sheer bloody determination way more than skill and were it not for Jones Jnrs incredible athletiscism he would have been nothing ( his fundamentals were pretty poor ). I personally think Floyd is a ***** but there is no way anyone can deny he is one of, if not the best of his generation. All time, who knows, I dont get in those discussion as its impossibe to truly say one way or the other as there are too many variables.

All that said tho I reckon Pacs style is a bad match up for Floyd.

There are some very good post here and I'd like to add the following. Usually most guys that are fast are fast in one way, they have to set down to throw multiple combinations or they have fast feet. It's very rare you have both. Ray Leonard and Floyd Jr are guys who possess both.

People marvel at his defense which is definitely outstanding but one thing he's mastered is the art of timing and distance. To the laymen they may say sometimes "he runs" but thats nonsense. He's one of the few fighters nowadays that cant fight as effectively backwards as he can forward.

His ability to adapt in the ring very unique also. He can be a puncher (when he wants to) a counter puncher, boxer etc. Regarding his mitt drill and it being a pattern. THAT IS VERY TRUE, however I will say this. I remember Ricky Hatton mocking the drill which is funny considering what happened to him throughout the fight so I guess it was more than just hand slaps huh, lol? But back to their mitt work, they're aren't too many things in sports that aren't patterns.

Basketball, american football plays, shooting a basketball(form wise), hitting a baseball, etc these are all pattern movements based on muscle memory and adapting. Floyd defending and countering shots when he works with Roger is all just building up that muscle memory so it becomes reaction based when it occurs in the ring.

He's NOT perfect and I do see ways that a fighter can break some of his tactics but that fighter better be prepared to take a pin point counter shot because accuracy is also one of Floyd's strong suits.

yes because those fighters are stupid to keep on punching from where they are standing, once PBF goes to his shell there's just no point throwing punches unless you move towards his front. But from the side? no chance..:-(
