He was no banger but whacked hard enough (and threw so much) that he could badly damage extremely durable opposition. Who's the Heavyweight he sparked in the first round? Maybe a Fireman of some sort Some 1st round K.O I read about where Greb sparked a guy with one punch and he outweighed him by a few stone. Anyone know what I'm on about? Also, who the **** is Duranium? I ain't been here for a while, is he another thick Mong **** or was I rambling? Blame it on the :rasta
You might be thinking of Gunboat Smith who really wasnt that big a HW. He was tall and lanky but could have easily made the LHW limit. Greb knocked him out in one round when he was past his prime (although Kearns and Dempsey were desperately trying to get a title match with Smith sanctioned at the time). Years later a lot of people came out with the story that Greb thumbed Smith to get the KO but the ringside reports dont back this story up. They state that Greb landed a perfectly timed and very hard punch right square on Smiths eye which dropped him immediately. Smith later said that the punch pushed his eye back into the ocular socket almost causing it to explode. It was feared for a time that he would lose the sight in that eye. He supposedly recovered but later reports from when he was older said he was blind in one eye so it may be that he lied and said he had recovered to continue with his career (which ended shortly anyway) and hoped for a title fight. Or you could be thinking of Al Benedict who was a good amateur prospect but never developed as a pro and had a pretty weak chin. Greb could definately hurt a guy with his punches but after he suffered numerous broken hands, wrists, and arms early in his career he really focused on outpointing people because if he injured his hands it would mean being out of the ring for a month or two which hurt his wallet. He showed numerous times that he could pop when he sat down on his punches. Gene Tunney had a great chin, even at HW, and Greb sent him reeling across the ring and almost down (the ropes saved him) in either their second or third fight.
Gunboat Smith, that's him. I imagin I amalgamated (spelling) a few fights My memory is shot to **** I used to be much better than this :rofl :good Surf Bat, Greg Paterson may well have coined that phrase, but I think it applies to Greb. All accounts from his opponents/sparring partners paints the picture of someone with a truly unique style. I guess that's why some of the comparisons used to try and capture what Greb is about are often pulled up as pure hyperbole. We simply cannot describe his style because it has not been seen before or since, and the attributes he possessed seem superhuman even for people well-versed with the volume of freaks this sport has produced. It still doesn't seem real that this fighter existed to me.
Double post Klompton, agree with you about Greb being able to put the hurt on when he sat down on his punches. No doubt he was damaging anyway, 4/6 oz gloves coming at you as constantly as Greb threw 'em is gonna' bash you up regardless, but my point was that every so often he could throw something in the mix that could **** his man up. In the 14th round with Walker, he hurt Mickey so bad he said he was 'on ***** street for a half hour after the fight' supposedly. And we all know how solid Mickey Walker was.
Oi fanny, I ain't had no acid tabs or mushies, just my usual large consumption of smoke. Greb plays with my mind when I'm sober (which isn't very often admittedly) but as you know it find it hard not to espouse his merits.
