This translates to "Effective". you could say the same about marciano.

I think greb's style was Not prety. He was most likley a tough, crafty, draining handful.

If Greb with his resume was not technicaly good, then it is a prety damning indictment on technical boxing.

It would prove that it was probably more effective to be technicaly bad.

No it wouldn't, Pacquaio is lacking technically, but gets away with it because of his physical abilities. However saying Pacquaio is technically lacking so technical boxing is overrated isn't true because improving himself technically would improve his ability

I don't think that Greb, or Pacquio for that matter, did what they did just based on physical abilities.

I also question whether improving either of them technicaly would pay dividends.

I have to agree here. You do what works for you.

Mickey Mantle, who was an "instinctive" hitter, once tried to improve on his technique after having had a convo on batting with Ted Williams, who was a "technical" hitter. Mantle said it got him into his head and screwed him up so bad that he had trouble hitting for awhile after that. Eventually he was able to get out of his head and go back to his instincts.

Some athletes are cerebral. Some of visceral. You go with what works. Greb was visceral.

This is great in theory, but I question whether it would have been better for him.

The book is what works 85% of the time for 85% of people.

If you could have achieved significant improvments for Harry Greb, then the would be truly frightning to behold!

You are correct. I've seen these reports, too.

They're usually in reference to Greb's tendency to "flail" or windmill. When you do that you look amateurish for sure. But I think we can agree that Greb made it work for him. :good

Like every other fighter, Greb learned all the standard boxing techniques when he first started out. Then when he'd mastered them he tossed aside what didn't work for him and kept what did. Other great fighters have done this as well (Cassius Clay, anyone?).

The fact that Greb could be so UN-technically correct was what worked for him. Mike Gibbons and other technically sound fighters have stated for the record at how badly their timing and technical skills were thrown off by Greb's erratic, unpredictable style.
