How the hell can anyone say that Joe Calzaghe is a ATG?

Jones Jr is lacking in resume also too so don't go too heavy.

You know fine well Hopkins (or Hopkins people) backed out of a fight 2002, so it wasn't 'out of the question'.

Well there's some real honesty for you. Good to see some boxing fans are not just blind followers of there national heros.

Likely the best SMW of all time but he did leave a lot of questions unanswered. Most people didn't get to see him in his prime so he's often underrated. Old Calzaghe was a different athlete than Joe before the hand issues.

Theres a belief that you have to fight in America to be an atg, but im not sure why.
Calzaghe was the best SMW ever... so far
Ottke and Hopkins had no intention of fighting Calzaghe years before when offered or in Hopkins case heavily upped his demands.
Other than Jones who was in the division above, who was Calzaghe meant to fight that would fight him, Collins retired in the build up to them fighting, Ottkes trainer admits Ottke had no interest of meeting him, and Hopkins agreed and then back tracked asking for more money. Toney was at CW when Calzaghe won his title.
In American SMWs he beat Mitchell, Brewer, Sheika, Lacy, Manfredo (who was in the ring top 10 when they fought), and sub par opposition in Jiminez, Pudwill, McIntyre. What other American SMWs were there that he didnt fight? Not to mention beating Woodhall, Reid, Bika, Veit (who holds a win and loss to current WBO LHW champ Braehmer), Kessler, Starie & Eubank.
He won Ring titles in LHW & SMW and won WBO, WBC, WBA, IBF titles in the SMW division, and beat the #1 LHW in Hopkins whos still rated at #1 in some lists. Yet Pavlik was completely beaten by Hopkins and although Pavlik won his title off Taylor he hasnt really defended against anyone of note yet in some eyes is thought of as a better fighter why?
But no I dont consider Calzaghe as an atg (correction added since post - Im not knowledgeable enough to say if hes an atg either), but I do think he was a fighter that always found a way to win and could have done alot more, but didnt, which goes against him.

Don't sweat it. Most of the UK fans know the deal too. It's the guys who just got indoctrinated into boxing who believe Calzaghe is an ATG. Terrific fighter, sure fire HOFer, but outside the top 100 ATGs.

Prince Badi Ajamu, Anthony Hanshaw, and shot blown up out of shape Tito Trinidad... Lets look at that 70-5 record for what it is.:deal

You might as well add Glen Kelly, the garbage man Roy gets ridiculed for fighting.... Wasn't he undefeated when Roy fought him?

Always makes me laugh to see people using the phrase 'ATG'.

Most of those people have no idea who they actually consider the top 100 fighters of all time and don't have anywhere near the knowledge required to actually make a valid stab at making such a list. Yet they'll quite happily say "x is/isn't an all time great". Quite funny.

Personally, I have no problem admitting that I don't have the depth of knowledge to comment on who is or isn't amongst the top 100 fighters ever, so I don't pretend to.

right - James Toney is an ATG , Hopkins is an ATG but Calazghe is not :rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl

Calazghe - 2 years after his retirement is still heavily discussed - there are 3 threads dedicated to him on the front page of ESB general today.

He was a great fighter and one of the best of the past 15 years. what the **** an ATG is nowdays I dont know but when I see who is often called an ATG I know Calazghe must be one too.

dude you may be right - but we are not talking about exposure we are taking about P4P or H2H in the SWM - then Calazghe is giving most fighters trouble.

Not ATG, but I guess an HOF'er by default. Kind of sucks that he made it there the way he did but who cares...he never got brave when he was supposed to and 80 percent of fans know that.

Records of fighters are far less important that who the fighter is or what point of his career he was when the fight happened...

Yeah Trinidad looks great by name, great by record, but when you consider that he had been retired for years, and was last defeated by Wright nearly 20 pounds south of what he fought Roy at.......:yep

Dont even hear about Calzaghe anymore. Only people that talk about him are his fans, retired undefeated and forgotten.
